Dear students, classified professionals, and faculty members;

            On June 29, 2023, the Supreme Court of the United States made a significant decision, striking down the use of affirmative action in recruitment and college admissions. This landmark ruling ends a twenty-year precedent of considering race as a positive factor in admission decisions to create diverse student populations. While this decision may pose challenges to achieving diversity in colleges nationwide, the Ventura County Community College District (VCCCD) remains unwavering in its commitment to providing an inclusive and equitable educational environment for all.

            The Supreme Court’s case was based on the principle of equal standing under the law, suggesting that race-conscious admissions are no longer necessary to achieve diversity in the student body. However, the reality of systemic discrimination and the unique obstacles faced by underprivileged communities persist, and our colleges recognize the importance of addressing these disparities.

            We take pride in our colleges—Moorpark, Oxnard, and Ventura colleges are all recognized as Hispanic-Serving Institutions, fostering an open and welcoming environment for everyone seeking education. Our colleges provide opportunities for students from all walks of life to come together, expand their worldviews, and cultivate empathy for diverse cultures, ethnic backgrounds, and life experiences.

            While affirmative action in college admissions may no longer be a policy, Moorpark, Oxnard, and Ventura colleges remain resolute in the fight for equity and inclusivity. We understand that the journey to a fair and just educational landscape may be challenging, but we are committed to making positive changes that uplift our communities and our world. We extend our gratitude to all individuals who continue to strive towards creating a better future for themselves and others. Together, we can foster change and lift one another to new heights.
