2022 Viewfinder STEM Summer Program

Viewfinder Summer Experience is a two-week STEM program designed to cultivate high school students’ sense of engagement, interest and identity focused on science, technology, engineering and math. Partnering with the community is a key effort of Oxnard College. This initiative supports collaboration with our partner secondary district, Oxnard Union High School District (OUHSD) and the K-8 districts within OC service area.

It is a two-week program that meets Monday through Friday from 8:30AM-2:30PM. The planned activities are designed to incorporate the following activities:

· Daily active learning to intentionally strengthen STEM content capacity, knowledge and skills.

· Daily active learning to intentionally strengthen STEM identity and engagement.

· Learning experiences embedded with CAL/ACT strategies and philosophy.

· Intentional STEM Career Awareness.

· Structured comprehension and collaboration opportunities leading to a presentation of knowledge and ideas (Presentation for families on the last day).

Strategies and activities promoted by the Viewfinder Mentors included:

· Resiliency and reflection

· Cascading mentoring

Aim of the Effort:

1. Bring STEM subject matter interest and hobbies into focus.

2. Merge STEM exploration with hands-on learning to unearth career paths and enhance STEM skills and life skills.

3. Learn by doing and create friendships along the way.

Titled "Dig In! - Community and Climate Change", this short film follows the story of an Oxnard College student into the environmental movement and a river restoration volunteer day on the Santa Clara River with Oxnard College faculty and community volunteers.

The movie is credited to Friends of the Santa Clara River and its volunteers and a growing partnership with Oxnard College.  FSCR is a non-profit with the mission to restore natural and cultural heritage of the river and to educate the public about this great resource.

Come hear about Dr. Lopez’s work in biomedical devices as a Regulatory Science Fellow at the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and student programs in the government for STEM majors. Dr. Lopez earned his B.S. in Biomedical Engineering for Rehabilitative Robotics and his Ph.D. in Biomedical Acoustics.

Monday, April 11th at 1pm via zoom present by the Director of STEM Dr. Klein Williams. Learn about the benefits of having a growth mindset. Gain a mindset to help you learn and grow in different aspects of your life.  Studies have shown that people with a growth mindset tend to learn and achieve more than people with a fixed mindset. With a Growth Mindset, you can believe that you are in control of your abilities. Mindsets have a major influence in your ability to achieve!
