Proyecto Puentes OC Summer Scholars Peer Mentors -Job Description

Proyecto Puentes is a new program at Oxnard College aiming to increase enrollment, retention, graduation and transfer for Hispanic and low-income students at Oxnard College.  We are hiring Peer Mentors to serve as embedded tutors for the OC Summer Scholars program.  Peer mentors serve as embedded course tutors for English R101-College Composition and PGR102- College Success courses over the Summer 2023 semester. This job will be in person on campus.

General Job Description:

Supporting the instructional program for OC Summer Scholars (ENG R101 and PG R102), providing tutoring, assisting students, and assisting instructors with delivery of instruction. 

This position is for Summer Session 2023. There are four positions available.

Specific job description details:

OC Summer Scholars embedded tutors are responsible for providing support services to Oxnard College incoming students through tutorial sessions, small-group workshops, and supplemental study sessions. Embedded tutors are paired with a specific section of a writing course (ENG R101- College Composition) and a personal growth course (PG R102- College Success) and work to support the students enrolled in that course section. 

Embedded tutors are expected to:

  • Attend all lecture portions of the courses (M, T, W, R 9:30 – 10:45 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. from 6/20/23 – 8/5/2023)
    • Work with students during small group activities in class
  • Meet with Proyecto Puentes and OC Summer Scholars leads for orientation and training related to the role, prior to the beginning of the summer session
  • Meet with instructor of record for the class for 1-2 days prior to the beginning of the summer session for course content-specific training
  • Meet with instructor of record for the class (~1-2 hours/week)
  • Work with students outside of class (~10 hours/week). This includes
  • Designing and facilitating workshops on specific topics or skills that students have requested additional support or practice with, and attend workshops presented by outside facilitators when needed
  • Working with students in small groups
  • Meeting with students for individual tutoring sessions
  • Generating context-specific questions, assessing students’ learning styles, prioritizing needs and tasks, explaining and modeling concepts or skills to students, and modifying pedagogical approaches based on students’ unique learning styles
  • Maintain regular communication with class instructor
  • Reach out regularly and proactively to students throughout the summer session to check in with them and encourage them to come to your workshops and tutor time
  • Develop and maintain discourse communities in partnership with the instructor of record
  • Participate in OC Summer Scholars program evaluation, as needed.

Minimum qualifications:

Applicants should

  • Have strong academic skills in Freshman English (ENG 101) or Personal Growth courses (particularly PG R101 and PG R102), and having passed both courses with a grade of B or higher;   
  • Be a current or former Oxnard College student, enrolled in at least 6 units as of Spring 2023;
  • Be available to participate in Tutor Training prior to the 6/20/23 course start;
  • Be available to work at least 5 hours per day Mondays through Thursdays;
  • Be available to attend 1 hour of professional development training per week;
  • Have a minimum overall Oxnard College GPA of 3.0;
  • Be able to contribute to the development and presentation of workshops, information sessions, and other supplemental academic support services;
  • Be patient and have a strong desire to help students achieve their goals;
  • Be motivated to learn new skills;
  • Possess the ability to work with peers in one-on-one tutoring sessions, as well as the ability to speak in front of groups and present workshops;
  • Enjoy one-on-one conversations with students and faculty;
  • Be comfortable with public speaking, willingness to learn and engage in motivational interviewing, and strong interpersonal and communication skills.  
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of the writing, reading, and research process;
  • Possess time management and stress management skills, including the ability to balance the demands of employment with academic pursuits;
  • Understand the importance of confidentiality regarding the students who seek academic support;
  • Have an understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of students and staff;
  • Be intentional about learning resources throughout campus including academic and non-academic support services.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience working with peers in collaborative learning environments;
  • Experience working with individuals from diverse ethnic, racial, socio-economic, academic, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds, especially first generation college students;
  • Experience facilitating small group discussions;
  • Experience working in an office environment.

American Conservation Experience (ACE)
