More than ever, there is an urgent need to confront issues of race, inequality and social justice and to build a deep awareness that promotes empathy and understanding. We need to face the challenge of acknowledging these issues. This includes taking steps to make changes that effectively address the underlying systemic issues giving rise to social injustice.

For the spring semester, Oxnard College will offer two new courses that focus on racial justice to educate students on social issues and ways to create social change.

An Introduction to Social Justice Studies (SJS R110) will introduce students to the interdisciplinary study of race and ethnicity in the United States and the world beyond, while examining social justice movements in relation to ethnic and racial groups in the US. African American Culture and Experience (ANTH R114) will use an anthropological perspective to explore concepts of race, identity, diaspora, and discrimination, while paying particular attention to the significant impact African Americans have had on American culture. Both courses are UC transferable (IGETC Area 4 applicable).

“The deep divisions and polarization in our nation, and the ugly manifestations of racist hatred, have made it clear that America is in urgent need of healing,” said President Sanchez. “The beginning of healing is understanding, and these two courses offer a path to such understanding.”

These two classes are among the many courses being offered at OC that spotlight social and racial justice. Other classes include: Intercultural Communication (COMM 113), Sports in American History (HIST R124), History of American Women (HIST R117), History of US II (HIST R140), Intro to Cultural Anthropology (ANTH R102), Race and Ethnic Relations (SOC R103), Intro to Chicana/o Studies (CHST R101), History of Mexicans in the United States in the United States (CHST R107), and Teaching in a Diverse Society (ECE R107).
