One of the advantages of leading a community college district is the opportunity to hear directly from people across Ventura County. Business owners, nonprofit leaders, educators, and civic officials often raise the same question in different ways. How do we prepare the next generation for a future that is changing quickly?

That question sits at the center of what community colleges do. Our mission has always been rooted in expanding opportunity, but opportunity does not happen in isolation. It grows when education stays closely connected to the communities it serves. When colleges listen carefully to employers, civic leaders, and residents, they can translate economic change into meaningful pathways for students.

Over the past several years, the Ventura County Community College District has made a deliberate effort to deepen those connections. Our colleges engage with chambers of commerce throughout the county, and district and college leaders serve on boards and regional initiatives that bring together education, industry, and community organizations. Those conversations help ensure that our programs reflect the needs of the region and that our students are prepared for the opportunities emerging around them.

Ventura County’s defense and aerospace sector offers a clear example of why that connection matters. Through our work with the Regional Defense Partnership and Navy Base Ventura County, we collaborate with elected officials, military leaders, defense contractors, and community partners who are part of a sector that supports more than 24,000 jobs and contributes roughly $4.6 billion annually to the regional economy.

Engagement with this sector helps inform how our colleges prepare students for careers that are increasingly important to both the regional economy and national security. At Moorpark College, for example, the Bachelor of Science in Applied CyberDefense and Network Operations prepares students to secure critical infrastructure and defend the networks that defense operations, government agencies, and private industry rely on every day.

Across the district, similar applied bachelor’s programs respond directly to regional workforce needs. Oxnard College’s Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene addresses critical shortages in healthcare, while Ventura College’s Bachelor of Science in Automotive Career Education supports one of the region’s most essential skilled trades.

Ventura County is also seeing continued growth in fields such as biotechnology and life sciences, while initiatives like the 805 HIVE Autonomous Innovation Center at the Camarillo Airport are exploring new applications for autonomous technologies and advanced mobility. As these sectors evolve, the Community Colleges of Ventura County have an important role to play in helping local residents gain the skills needed to participate in those industries.

At the same time, we are looking ahead to the next areas of opportunity for the region. The Santa Clara Valley and the Highway 126 corridor represent an area where thoughtful collaboration between education, industry, and local government will help support future economic development while creating new workforce pathways for Ventura County residents.

This kind of forward thinking is reflected in the Community Colleges of Ventura County 2035 strategic plan, which focuses on strengthening workforce pathways, expanding access to higher education, and ensuring our colleges remain responsive to the communities we serve.

At its core, the mission of a community college is simple. We are in the business of delivering hope and opportunity. When colleges stay connected to their communities, that mission becomes something tangible for the students and families we serve.

Ventura County’s future will be shaped by the people who live and work here. By staying closely connected to our community and responsive to its needs, our colleges can help ensure that future is one defined by opportunity, preparation, and possibility for the next generation.
