The Wildland Fire Academy application process determines the student participants for each Wildland Academy. Applications are chosen on a first-come, first-serve basis to fill 30 seats.
Students can expect the following:
- The Oxnard College Wildland Fire Academy will be scheduled for Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays beginning at 0800 and ending at 1700.
- The academy begins in January and ends the last week of March.
- Classes may meet during spring break.
- Good physical condition is necessary to complete this course.
Admission to the Wildland Fire Academy is open to all students. Complete Application Packet is required. Application will be available on this website in the fall. All documents must be submitted with the application.
PHYSICAL FITNESS REQUIREMENT
Prospective cadets will need to score at least 8.6 on the 20-meter shuttle run (beep test) to demonstrate the minimum physical fitness standard. Failure to meet this minimum standard will result in non-acceptance. The test is run between two lines 20 meters apart in time with a recorded cadence that increases in speed; a score of 8.6 is 65 lengths, and the test is stopped at 10.6. A candidate's score is taken into consideration when determining acceptance into the academy.
See this video for an example of how a beep test is conducted: VCFD Beep Test Instructions
