Maria del Carmen Guerrero
Dean, Career and Technical Education, Oxnard College
Ms. Guerrero began her career in education as a division secretary in the Division of Technology at Moorpark College (MC), Moorpark, CA and then moved to a full-time faculty position in a bilingual program teaching clerical skills at the college's off-campus center in Fillmore, CA. She continued teaching in this program when California's Prop 13 forced the program to relocate to Ventura College. Ms. Guerrero remained at Ventura College until 1992 when she began a full-time instructor position at Oxnard College. These varied assignments have provided Ms. Guerrero the opportunity to be a member of the faculty at all three of the colleges in the Ventura County Community College District.
At Oxnard College, she served twice as Department Chair; three terms as Academic Senate President in the calendar years of 1998, 1999, and 2000; served twice as the co-chair of the Accreditation Self-Study Process; and served on numerous college and district committees. Additionally, Ms. Guerrero has served on numerous accreditation teams for the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, a division of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, where she visited colleges throughout California. In 2008, Ms. Guerrero was appointed Dean of Career and Technical Education at Oxnard College, and is now in her sixth year in this position. Ms. Guerrero earned bachelor's and master's degrees in Business Organizational Management from the University of La Verne and received an associate of arts degree from Moorpark College. In all, she has served the community for over 40 years at all three colleges in the Ventura County Community College District.
Her community service includes holding the position of Chair of the Board of Directors for the Santa Paula Chamber of Commerce and three years as a member of its board of directors. Additionally, she has been involved with non-profit arts and culture organizations. Prior to her career as an educator, Ms. Guerrero was a Senior Contracts Manager working for various aerospace companies in Ventura County.
Ms. Guerrero has received numerous awards including, Ed Robings Award for Excellence in Service by an Administrator, awarded by Oxnard College; Cultural Arts Award by the Santa Paula Latino Town Hall; Soroptomist Women in Education; Port Hueneme Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Year; and most recently the Latino Leadership Award in Education by El Concilio Family Services.
