What is Oxnard College CalWORKs?
The CalWORKs Program is a partnership with Oxnard College and the Department of Social Services to serve Welfare recipients who are currently receiving CalWORKs benefits.
This partnership is of significant benefit to the student who must quickly gain educational and vocational training and experience to become employed and self-sufficient.
Activities:
Collaboration with County Welfare Department in order to assist students in achieving their goals and support the county in their efforts to assist their clients in becoming self-sustaining.
- Local Labor Market Linkages
Oxnard College CalWORKs researches local labor and coordinates with career technical education to identify specific areas of study that will lead CalWORKs students into employment based on demonstrated labor market demand. - Employment-Related Services
for job preparation, development, and placement (work-study and paid or unpaid internships), post-employment services are also provided to former welfare recipients to assist them with job retention, advancement, and skills upgrade. Easy Access to Successful Employment for Life (EASEL) sessions are conducted for College CalWORKs students to assist them in accessing career goals, and assisting them in overcoming job and personal barriers.

- Intake and orientation for new CalWORKs students;>
- Registration assistance
- Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) and Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education (CARE) eligibility
- Assistance in applying for financial aid opportunities
- Academic, Career, & Personal Counseling: Development of Individual Training Plan (ITP)
- Case management and tracking of student progress
- Easy Access to Successful Employment for Life (EASEL) trainings
- Work-Study and Internship (unpaid) Placements with focus on job-skills acquisition
- Counselors and staff familiar with Welfare to Work (WTW)requirements and regulations
- Job Development & Placement,>Post-Employment Services
- Liaison with Employment Specialists to assist students
How are recipients referred to these services? A referral is made by the Department of Social Services to the CalWORKs/EOPS receptionist at the college's CalWORKs office.
Some individuals receiving cash aid make the first contact themselves by just coming in to the office or applying online.
The CalWORKs counselors will coordinate with the Department of Social Services and the student all classes and support services the student is eligible to receive.
