OCTV - Oxnard College Television

(Oxnard, California)The Oxnard Student Digi Film Festival wrapped up another year of fabulous films with its award cermony on Saturday, November 5 at the Oxnard College Performing Arts facility. The event, produced in partnership with Oxnard College and the City of Oxnard, screened over 50 films during the 2 night event. This year was marked by a big increase in screen time for the festival. Andrea Baltazar, the 2011 festival director said, "Having the festival at Oxnard College this year gave us the chance to show off more films. I wanted to squeeze in as many great films as possible, so we added a second screening on Friday night." Baltazar said that gave them the chance to include longer films than had been possible in the past.

In addition to adding more screening time for 2011, the festival had more awards for the students as well. First place winners in the College Division received both trophies and prizes such as a $500 rental of film production equipment from EVS Rentals, a copy of Adobe CS 5.5 Production Premium, or a one-terrabyte hard drive as well as a subscription to the online tutorial website, lynda.com. Books from Focal Press were given to the second place college division films. First place winners in the High School Division received small waterproof camcorders along with a 4 Gig memory card. Judging coordinator Kitty Merrill said, "We like to honor the students that make these wonderful films, and our sponsors give us the ability to do that."

The Saturday night screening opened with a showing of some of the work from the fifth annual Filmmakers Day, held the previous week at Oxnard College. About 75 Students from around the county came for a day of workshops, food and fun. Workshops on Filmmaking, Acting, Editing, Make Up and Special Effects and Video News Production gave students and community members a chance to get hands-on experience in several aspects of producing film and video. Filmmakers Day coordinator, George Ortega led the Film in a Day workshop and said "as a student, I know what it's like when you want to do something, but you need a little help getting started. That's what this day is for - a way to get started."

The film festival screenings had record attendance this year, with audience members coming from as far away as Fillmore, Moorpark and West Los Angeles to see screenings of films they or their friends and family had made. "Being in a 400-seat auditorium was great. We had enough room for everyone who wanted to be here," said Merrill. But the future for the festival is uncertain at the moment. Oxnard College is threatening to discontinue the film and video program, citing cost and the existence of a similar program within the district at Moorpark College. But festival volunteers emphasized the positive throughout the event. "The issue with the program gave us an extra reason to make the festival great this year," said Baltazar. "We want people to see the value this program gives to our community."

Merrill agreed. "It's an important way to make sure that this community has a local voice, in a time when there are few places for individuals to be heard in our community," she said.
