Instructor New to Canvas? Instructions to get you started

To report Student Learning Outcomes (SLO's), use this link to get to your eLumen scorecards. Scorecards are available once a term. The scorecard is based on a single section taught, and contains the class roster for that section, and the Course SLO's that have been assigned to that course. A rubric (Exemplary, Average, No Proficiency, for example) has been assigned to the course, and scores are entered on a per-student basis.

The Scorecard PDF will walk you through the process of scoring your students in a section for a term.

Flex Week

Every FLEX week and additional FLEX days offer faculty (and staff!) a myriad of instructional technology tools, student learning outcomes, and online teaching options. Please pay attention to college and district-wide communications about FLEX opportunities so you don't miss special and regularly offered workshops! Emails about FLEX week/days opportunities come during the summer and winter break, so DO check your VCCCD District email over breaks!

FLEX workshops have regularly included:

  • Canvas LMS Basics
  • Canvas LMS Advanced
  • Online Teaching Best Practices
  • Regular and Effective/Substantive Contact
  • SLOs and eLumen
  • Google Apps for Education
  • Adobe Acrobat Professional
  • Online forms and survey tools

Contact the Professional Development Committee  to discuss ideas for future instructional technology workshops pertinent to all faculty.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)

To report your Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) via eLumen, please contact  John Habal, your Technical Data Specialist and SLO contact. This application requires a username and password, which can be of your choosing, so please contact John to set your credentials up. It takes only a few minutes.

Online Teaching

If you are planning to teach an online, hybrid, or hyflex course in the future for VCCCD, you must complete the district Online Teacher Training Course in Canvas prior to assignment.

Completion of the course prepares you to teach online for all three colleges in the district and effectively set-up and manage your courses with the most recent California Community College Chancellor's Office standards for distance education. The training course is four weeks long and is conducted online, to replicate the student experience. Instructors should be comfortable using Canvas prior to signing up for the OTTCC.

Register for the training that fits your schedule best using this form: Online Teaching Training in Canvas Sign-Up Form

Which Instructors have completed the VCCCD Online Teaching Certificate Course?

A Certification list for all 3 colleges is maintained by the Instructional Technologist Designer team. The list is updated a couple of weeks after each training course completes. If an instructor is significantly behind and finishing a previous course, the Instructional Technologist will need to be notified in order to confirm completion before they are added to the district-wide list. If it seems possibly out of date, please contact Laura Knight for verification.
