Fire Academy Frequently Asked Questions

 

  1. What is the appropriate dress for the mandatory orientation?  Business Casual.

  2. Can I bring my family and friends?  No.

  3. How many weeks is the academy?  Fall and Spring are 18 weeks (No Spring Break). Graduation is mid-December and mid-May.

  4. What do I need to buy? A list will be provided to you at the orientation. This will include supplies and uniform information.  

  5. Where do I get my textbooks?  Textbooks will be available at the Oxnard College bookstore. 

  6. How do I register for the academy? If you do not have a student ID (900 #), you must apply for admission to the college. You will be allowed to register for the academy after you have attended the mandatory orientation. You will need to provide your 900 number at orientation so we can clear you for registration. Payment is required at the time of registration. 

  7. When is the first day of the academy?  The academy begins on the first day of each semester. We will let you know what time to arrive for class at orientation and provide you with the required list of items you must have on the first day of class. 

  8. Must I  be physically fit to succeed in the academy? Yes. The Fire Academy requires strenuous physical activity for long periods of time. 

  9. What are the hours of the academy?  The academy meets Monday through Thursday from 0615 to 1720.

  10. Am I allowed to miss any days of the academy? The Fire Academy schedule is structured and inflexible. If you miss any required State Fire Training topic for FFI/FFII instruction, you will not receive your Firefighter I/II Certification. Additional attendance details and requirements will be reviewed during orientation. 

  11. How much does the academy cost?  Approximately $4,000.00. These costs are broken down on the academy website link
