Oxnard Women's Volleyball Scores WSC Win
November 5—Oxnard
It was an exciting match -- host Oxnard defeated Hancock College in women's volleyball in 4 games. The scores were 27-25, 25-20, 13-25, and 27-25.
Sina Tuitama (above) led Oxnard College with 15 kills -- more than twice as many as anyone else on the team. She also had 8 blocks -- five of them alongside transfer sophomore setter Becka Simanu, who saw action as both a setter and a right-side hitter.
Libero Andy Perez led all players with 37 digs. She tied Becka Simanu in service aces with four apiece. As an outside hitter last year, Andy had several kills and digs in efforts last year that twice came up short against Hancock College, once in five games, and once in four.
Sophomore Stacey Guijo (left) had a great all-around performance with 19 digs, six kills, two aces and two blocks.
Kwameisha Thompson played a solid game as a front-row right side player, while her sophomore sister, Raneisha recorded five blocks and several kills at crucial moments throughout the match.
The play that Hancock players will surely not soon forget was match point, as Becka Simanu's jump-serve hit the tape, bounced up and seemingly towards Oxnard, then back over the net to Hancock's side to end the match. To get to match point, Kamilah Alegre recorded a key kill from the back row to prevent Hancock from taking game four and forcing a deciding set.
While Oxnard began last year's season 5-0 and has at least three victories against WSC opponents, this is Oxnard College's first WSC Northern Division league win in the three years since the program took a 2-year hiatus. The players hope to continue to improve with three matches yet to play this season.
Assistant Coach Brooke Hanson, who the prior weekend had placed 9th on the FIVB International Beach Volleyball Tour in China, changed her return flight from Thailand to be back for the contest. She is an All-American setter who graduated from UCSB who focuses on Oxnard's setters, outside hitters, and defense.
Oxnard next travels to play Santa Barbara City College on Tuesday, will travel to Cuesta on Friday, and will close out its season hosting Ventura on November 16. All matches are at 7pm.

Oxnard's third different line-up in as many sets changed the momentum. Kamliah Alegre (pic) stepped into the Libero role and fired up the team. Oxnard took game 3 25-23. Andy Perez, normally limited to back row action as Libero, recorded several kills from the outside. Gisell San Jose also came off the bench to set for the Condors and connected successfully with middles Sina Tuitama and Raneisha Thompson.
