Lady Condors Open Athletics Season with a Bang
August 29—Oxnard
The Seabreeze Tourney was an outstanding success for the Oxnard College Women’s Soccer Team. The weather was perfect, and the facilities were in great shape for the opening event for the Oxnard College Athletic Department.
The only drawback to the tournament was Hancock College (Oxnard’s first round opponent) was unable to field a team, and forfeited to the Condors. Oxnard had one open game on their schedule, so to allow all the teams’ two games of competition; the Condors played a double-header on Sunday.
Oxnard was outstanding on both sides of the ball against West LA. They got goals from Maricruz Magana, Marlene Valdez, and Tanya McGinley in the first half. Ashley Arana notched one more in the second half for a 4-0 shutout. Everybody got on the field, and the starters got a chance to save their legs for the second game.
The second game was extremely physical against El Camino-Compton Center. The Condors prevailed 2-0, led by Maricruz Magana, who scored her second goal of the day. Brittany Charles iced the game with a fine move between two defenders, scoring with left-footed blast.
Oxnard is now 3-0 and plays at home this Friday against L.A. Valley College; game time is 4:00 PM.
OC Condor Earns Scholarship at UCSD
August 26
Isidore Herrera ran cross country and graduated from Oxnard College in May. He has now earned a starting spot on the UCSB Gaucho squad by finishing 3rd in their time trials.
Isidore was a state finalist four times (two for cross country and two for track at Moorpark College), and earned three first team Western State Conference awards.
Geno Sharp commented, “Isidore is extremely dedicated and easy to coach…(he) will no doubt continue to succeed at the NCAA Division 1 level, because of the great program he is joining, coupled with his terrific work ethic.”
Congratulations to Izzy—Go Condors!
Bryan Hill Becomes New Condor Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach
Condor Athletics has hired a new Assistant Coach for the Men’s Soccer Program. Coach Bryan Hill comes with an array of playing and coaching experience.
He has played as a professional goalie for the Harrisbury City Islanders in the professional USL-2 division, and the Ventura County Fusion, who are in the USL-PDL. His focus will be on his specialties of goalkeeping and defense, but will also be a valued resource for the entire program.”
Bryan is excited for the challenge of taking a strong program to the next level. “This Condor squad is chalk-full of talent and depth…(we) have the ability to become one of the best in the state”.
With Head Coach Ross Greaney at the helm, the abundance of talent being recruited to OC, and the addition of Bryan Hill, the Condors are in a position to “Soar to New Heights”.

Four-year schools signing Oxnard's baseball players
July 22, 2010
The success of the Oxnard College baseball team hasn’t stopped with a championship season on the diamond. At least 10 Condors have signed to play for four-year schools next year.
“That’s a large group, the most we’ve ever had,” said Oxnard coach Jon Larson. “We had a good group.”
At least three players from the Western State Conference title-winning team will be playing Division I baseball next year. Third baseman Bryan Willson (Camarillo High), the WSC North Player of the Year, signed with Central Arkansas. Center fielder Brad Greve (Newbury Park) signed with Long Island. Catcher Zack McDonell (Pacifica) signed with Hawaii.
That number would climb to four if pitcher Justin Bricker (Camarillo) can successfully walk onto the team at Stanford. The engineering student with a 4.0 GPA has already beaten long odds by successfully transferring to the prestigious Palo Alto school.
“It’s pretty exciting for us,” said assistant coach Roger Frash.
Pitchers Chris Defratus (Rio Mesa), Santos Reyes (Channel Islands) and Joey Juarez (Hueneme) will give Division II Colorado State-Pueblo a trio of Oxnard-native arms.
All-State picks Jonathan Erb (Camarillo) and J.C. Aguayo (Hueneme) highlight the Condors moving on to NAIA schools. First baseman Erb will swing it for Azusa Pacific. Outfielders Aguayo and Juan Reveles (Oxnard) are headed to Northwestern Oklahoma. First baseman Scott McNally will play for Friends University (Kan.) .
“That’s what it’s all about,” said Larson. “That’s the most important thing.”
Franz signs: It’s not just the baseball players who are earning scholarships at Oxnard. Dominique Franz, co-captain of the women’s volleyball team, will play at Master’s College in Santa Clarita this fall. The 6-foot middle blocker from Hueneme High led the team in kills.

Oxnard Drops Final Game in Heartbreaking Fashion
May 8 – Oxnard
The Oxnard Condor baseball team won the WSC, but didn’t get past the first round of the regional playoffs, losing 11-10 to Palomar College. The Condors led 2-0 after one inning, 4-2 after three innings, and broke the game open to lead 10-4 after five innings of play.
Palomar mounted their comeback with two in the sixth, and scored five runs in the ninth, to win in walk-off fashion.
The Condors won as a team all year, and lost this as a team. They should all be proud of the way they played and moreover, all the terrific work these young men did in the classroom as students.

Condors Drop Game One of Regional Series
May 7—Oxnard
The Oxnard College baseball team dug themselves a seven-run hole after two innings. The Palomar Comet six-run (unearned) first inning put the Condors on their heels. They managed 3 runs in the third to make it 9-3, but couldn’t get much closer, with the final score 17-5.
Justin Bricker took the loss to fall to 7-2, while Ryan Wilkins for Palomar picked up the victory for the Comets. JC Aguayo, Bryan Willson, Harper White, Zack McDonell, and Jake Mahan all had RBI’s, and McDonell was robbed twice that would have driven in multiple runs.
The best-of-three series continues tomorrow, with the first pitch scheduled for 11:00. Game two will start 30 minutes after the completion of game one, if necessary.
Condors Soar into Playoffs
Oxnard CA
The Oxnard College baseball team has reached their first goal of the season. They set out to win the WSC Championship, and they did so at Hancock College last Thursday. Harper White provided the game-winning blast, with a two-run homer in the top of the ninth for the 8-6 victory.
The Condors finished off the season with a convincing win at home. They swept second-place Hancock last week to win its first WSC North title since 2005 by three games.
Behind the rock-solid pitching rotation of J.C. Aguayo (7-2, 2.97 ERA), Justin Bricker (7-1, 3.84) and Bryan Willson (7-3, 2.57) and a balanced lineup led by Jonathan Erb (.414, 15 doubles, six home runs, 47 RBIs) and Jake Mahan (.363, 12 extra-base hits, 40 runs scored), the Condors were ranked No. 4 in Southern California and No. 9 in the Western region in last week’s polls, before rising to No. 3 in the final RPI Index on Saturday. (VC Star).

OC Needs One More for the WSC Crown
April 27--Ventura
This time, J.C Aguayo (below right) pitched past the seventh-inning stretch and the Oxnard College baseball team moved within one win of the Western State Conference title.
Aguayo pitched eight strong innings and second baseman Jake Mahan (left) hit for the cycle as the Condors buried a few demons in regaining sole possession of first place Tuesday afternoon with a 13-4 win over host Ventura. The last time the Condors visited Ventura, Aguayo left the game with a 12-1 lead on March 25, only to watch his team lose 13-12 in extra innings. “That never happened,” said Mahan, stoically.
This time, the Hueneme High product make sure by striking out eight, allowing just six hits and one earned run in improving to 6-2. “We knew he wasn’t coming out today,” said Ventura coach Don Adams. “He was really dominant. We had no answer for him.” Mahan was 4 for 6 with three RBIs and four runs scored and Jonathan Erb was 3 for 5 with three RBIs as the Condors confronted some bad memories by opening up a 4-0 lead after one inning and 12-2 lead into the seventh-inning stretch. “This is a tough place to win,” said Oxnard coach Jon Larson. “This is a scary field. With the wind blowing out, you can score runs in bunches.”
Oxnard (24-10, 14-4) needs only to split its two-game series with Hancock on Thursday and Friday to win its first WSC North title since 2005. Hancock (21-12, 13-5) fell a game off the pace with a 19-6 loss at Santa Barbara City. Conner Rehage was 4 for 4 with a grand slam and eight RBIs for the third-place Vaqueros.
Justin Bricker (6-1), who is 6-0 in WSC North play, will take the ball Thursday in Santa Maria for Oxnard. “I’m excited,” said Bricker, who has beaten every other WSC North opponent sans Hancock, which he has yet to face.
The loss left Ventura (15-18, 7-11) eliminated from postseason consideration. “They can swing it,” said Larson of VC. “They’re a very good club. They might be first or second in another conference.”
For the second straight game, Oxnard built an early 4-0 lead on Ventura as Erb and Harper White delivered RBI singles and Blake Adame slugged a sacrifice fly. But that was Oxnard’s early lead Saturday, when the visiting Pirates roared back to win 6-4.
Oxnard catcher Zach McDonnell, who finished a triple short of the cycle, slugged a solo home run to push the OC lead to 5-0 in the fourth. Ventura got a pair of unearned runs in the fifth, but the Condors responded with four in the sixth to build a 9-2 lead. McDonell doubled and Luis Andrade, Brad Greve and Mahan singled to set the table for Aguayo’s sacrifice fly and Erb’s two-run double.
In the seventh, Mahan made it 1 by losing his third home run of the season deep into the tree beyond the right-field fence before tripling onto the hill in deep right-center field in the ninth.(VC Star)
Condors Drop One to VC
April 24—Oxnard
The Condors came out hot against Ventura scoring 4 runs in the first two innings. Unfortunately, that was all the offense Oxnard could muster, losing 6-4. Bryan Willson took the loss (7-3), giving up 4 earned runs, and scattering 10 hits.
Zack McDonell went 2 for 3, with a walk. JC Aguayo went 2 for 4, with a double, walk, RBI, and run scored. Wilson helped his own cause, going 2 for 5, with an RBI, and a run. Brad Greve (above) was 2 for 5, with a run scored and a stolen-base. Greve also turned in two big-league plays at short-stop.
Fortunately for the Condors, Hancock College also lost today, keeping Oxnard in first place in the WSC North (13-4, 23-10 overall). The Condor battle VC again on Tuesday at 2:30 pm.
Condors Sweep Moorpark
April 22 and 23—Moorpark and Oxnard
Thursday at Moorpark College, the Condor baseball squad won 6-5, in a tough WSC ballgame. JC Aguayo (6-3, left) got the win on the afternoon, with Bryan Willson picking up the save.
Zack McDonell went 3 for 5 with 2 doubles, and a run scored. Jake Mahan was also 3 for 5, with an RBI and a run scored. Luis Andrade went 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored. Aguayo helped his cause going 2 for 4, with a double, a walk, 2 RBI, and one run. Jonathon Erb was 2 for 4, with a walk and an RBI. Eric Weiss went 2 for 5, with a RBI and a run. Brad Greve was also 2 for 5, with a run scored.
_________________________________________________________________________________________
In Fridays make-up game at Oxnard, the Condors crushed the Raiders 10-5, behind a complete game by Justin Bricker (6-1). He scattered 10 hits and 3 earned runs, striking out 8.
Zack McDonell (left)went 2 for 3, with a double, a walk, and RBI, and a run scored. Bryan Willson was 2 for 4, with a three-run blast in the third inning. Jonathon Erb (right) was 2 for 4 with a walk, and three runs scored, including the winning run in the third inning. Jake Mahan was 2 for 5, with a double, 2 RBI, and a run scored.
This win allowed Oxnard to sweep the season 4-game series with the Raiders.
Oxnard Comes Up With Huge Team Win Over Cuesta
April 17--Oxnard
Bryan Willson (left) admits the bat feels a little heavier on the days he’s also on the mound. Which makes his performance Saturday afternoon all the more impressive.
The sophomore from Camarillo High spun a five-hit shutout and also helped himself with the game-winning hit as the Oxnard College baseball team turned back visiting Cuesta, 3-0.
“Just trying to help us win games,” said Willson. He was 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored as the Condors cleanup hitter. On the mound, he struck out only the first and final batters, but allowed just six base-runners and retired all four batters he faced with runners in scoring position to become the ninth pitcher in the state to win seven games.
In doing so, he joined a rare club of Oxnard pitches who have beaten Cuesta home and away in the same season.“I felt good on all my pitches,” said Willson. “It’s really just trying to get the first-pitch strike.”
The dominant performance allowed the first-place Condors (21-9, 11-3 WSC North) to bounce back from a 3-2 ninth-inning loss in San Luis Obispo on Thursday and stay one game ahead of second-place Hancock, which beat visiting Ventura 6-3 in Santa Maria. “We know every game matters,” said sophomore J.C. Aguayo.
The game was scoreless in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Jake Mahan reached on an infield error, stole second and scored on Willson’s single.
Oxnard added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to give Willson some insurance.
In the seventh, Harper White lined a leadoff single to left field and scored on Zach McDonell’s double down the right-field line.
In the eighth, Willson drove a one-out single to center field, moved to third on Jonathan Erb’s single to right and scored on Blake Adame’s groundout.
Adame was also huge at third base, making eight plays to keep the Cougars off the bases. “My third baseman played really well,” said Willson. (VC Star)
Oxnard Baseball Drops Tough Game against Cuesta
April 15—San Luis Obispo
The Condors drove up to SLO Town, and lost 3-2 in the ninth inning.
JC Aguayo (5-3, pic left) pitched 9 strong innings, allowing 3 runs, 9 hits, while striking out 11 Cougars, and only a 1 walk. “He was throwing many great pitches for strikes, and got ahead of a lot of batters,” said Assistant Coach Geno Beville.
In the 9th inning, Bryan Wilson walked to start off OC.Jonathan Erb then hit a single to the right side, with Blake Adame moving the runners over with bunt. He fortunately reached on an error to load the bases. Harper White then grounded into a run scoring double-play. Zack McDonell (right) hit a clutch single to tie the ball game.
In the bottom of the 9th, after retiring the first two batters, Aguayo walked the next Cougar, hit the next, and then a walk-off single ended the game.
The Condors record is 20-9 overall and 10-3 in the WSC. They host the Cougars tomorrow at 1 pm at the Condors Nest.
Softball Takes Tough Loss
April 15—Ventura
The Lady Condor softball squad was looking to improve their playoff chances. They were turned away by the Ventura Pirates, 11-2 (5 innings). Michelle Getman (8-5) took the loss during her toughest outing of the season.
“Today wasn’t her day,” commented Assistant Coach Todd Prieto. “The ladies pressed a little today, and we didn’t get it done.” Since being swept by Ventura on March 23, Oxnard (20-14, 11-7) had won seven of its last eight games to soar into third place and the Condors were on the verge of forcing themselves into the playoff picture.
But the Condors were 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position before Anyssa Riley(above)drove in Oxnard’s lone runs with a double with two outs in the top of the fifth inning.
“We were in control of our destiny,” said Oxnard coach Paul Garziano. “But Ventura came out and played well. They beat us.” But Garziano was proud of his team, which nearly doubled its win total from a year ago, when it finished in the WSC Gold basement. “We made sure to tell the girls how proud we are,” said Garziano. (VC Star)
OC Softball Sweeps Cuesta
April 13—San Luis Obispo
Michelle Getman (pic top left) pitched a two-hit shutout in the 5-0 win and Priscilla Garcia (pic top right)went 3 for 4, scored three runs and pitched the final two innings to pick up her fourth save in the 6-4 win as Oxnard swept Cuesta for the first time in San Luis Obispo.
Jessica Alcala (pic bottom left) was 2 for 4 with a triple in the first game and Brystal Hood (pic bottom right) was 2 for 4 with a solo homer in the second game as the Condors (21-13, 11-6) moved past Cuesta (16-20-1, 9-6) into third place.

JC Aguayo drove in Brad Greve to produce the winning run, with two outs. The Condors added two more insurance runs, with a double by Bryan Willson (above). Santos Reyes came in the ninth and pitched a scoreless inning, striking out two, for the save. Justin Bricker wasn’t as sharp as normal, but still managed to get the win, moving him to 5-1 on the season.
