Oxnard Pounds Cerro Coso 17-6, Loses 6-5 in Double-Header
February 4—Oxnard
Baseball opening day at the Condors Nest was a launching pad, with Oxnard and Cerro Coso combining for seven home runs. Bryan Willson and Zack McDonell went yard in the first game, with Jake Mahan, Blake Adame, and Santos Reyes adding homers of their own, in game two. The Condors hammered 14 hits, and scored 17 runs in their first game of 2010. Bryan Wilson got the win, with Santos Reyes and Max Mackey in relief.
Game two was all Condors again, until the Coyotes scored five runs in the fifth inning. The game was shortened to seven innings, and the Condors needed the extra frames. The final out was a diving catch by the Cerro Coso center-fielder, with the bases full of Condors. The final score was 6-5, with Justin Bricker taking the tough loss.
The Condors take their high-powered offense on the road against Santa Ana, February 9 at 2 pm.
Women’s Softball Has Tough Time at Orange Coast
February 3—Orange Coast
Game one saw Prescilla Garcia (right) pitching a strong 5 1/3 innings in relief of Michelle Getmen, to hold the Pirates to
four runs. The Condors were only able to muster three of their own, taking a 4-3 defeat. “It was a game we should have won, but couldn’t get adjusted to their off-speed pitcher” remarked Head Coach Paul Garziano.
Prescilla Garcia was 2 for 2, with 2 RBI’s, and is now batting .563 on the season, with 8 RBI’s.
Game two was certainly an anomaly, with the final score 13-1, in favor of Orange Coast. The Lady Condors made nine errors, and couldn’t get anything going offensively. Michelle Getman pitched 2 and 1/3 innings, giving up 6 hits, but only 1 earned run. Jessica Shaw came in and allowed only 2 earned runs in nearly 2 innings, but the Condor defense struggled to make plays.
Coach Garziano said “It’s impossible to win any game with nine errors…We will learn and go on to the next game. This is a good group, and will certainly improve and perform well (going forward).”
This double-header loss puts their record at 2-3-1 on the season. The Lady Condors travel to Mission College on February 9th, at 2:30 pm.
Condor Basketball Sweeps Hancock
February 3—Oxnard
The Oxnard College Women’s Basketball Team did something they haven’t done in 14 years. On Wednesday night, they beat Hancock 75-72 to secure their first winning season since 1997. Rose Nichols had a monster game with 21 pts (9-11 from the field), 14 boards (8 offensive), and five steals. Coco Bradley had a double-double as well, with 14 points and 10rebounds. Alicia Nichols chipped in with 12 points.
The Lady Condors led by 20 points at one point, only to see their lead evaporate. The Bulldogs made it a close game at the end, with pressure on defense, and great perimeter shooting. The Condors prevailed, however to move their record to 13-7, and 4-3 in the WSC (4th place).
__________________________________________________________________________________________
The Oxnard Men had quite the opposite experience. They came out sluggish to start-- only leading 35-32. Bryce Showalter came off the bench to lead the scoring at halftime, with nine points (.
Ryan McLucas got some great looks in the second half, with four- three pointers (six in the game). He finished with 20 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. “Big Game” James Ennis had 16, and Craig Lee had 12. The Condors took control in the second half, and won convincingly 77-61.
This puts the men’s record at 11-11, and 4-3 in conference, half a game behind Pierce for third. Both the men and women go on the road to face Cuesta this Saturday, starting at 5 pm.
Women's Softball Starts Strong:
The Lady Condor Softball squad kicked-off their 2010 campaign with wins over San Diego Mesa (6-2) and Fullerton (3-0). They were leading Chaffey College when the game was called due to time constraints. One loss to Citrus College (0-8), put the Condor Softball record at 2-1-1 on the new season.
The softball team plays next at Orange Coast starting at 1 pm.
Oxnard Wins One, Loses One against VC
January 27, 2010—Oxnard
The Lady Condors battled to the very end against number one state-ranked Ventura College. They came up just short (63-52) of their first win, in 31 tries, against the Pirates. With a four point lead at halftime, the Condors had Ventura questioning their effort. “Oxnard is to be commended for playing harder than we did,” said Coach Ned Mircetic. “They played hard on almost every possession. They swarmed the offensive boards.”
The game was close until the No. 1 Pirates scored 12 of the final 14 points. The Condors were led by 11 points from Coco Bradley(left), nine points each from Takara Prezzie and Shaniqua Perkins and eight from Arlene Cortez. “It was fun to be able to match up with them,” said Oxnard Head Coach Phil Sherman. “Some years it hasn’t been close.”
The game can be seen on OCTV: (http://www.oxnardcollege.edu/departments/administrative/octv/whats_on.shtml)
The Lady Condors are now 12-7, and 3-3 in the WSC.
The men’s game was simply electric. The game was decided in overtime, with the Condors prevailing, 85-82. There were endless story lines, with many of the players coming from local high schools. “I knew everybody out there,” said “Big Game” James Ennis(left). “It was like playing pickup.” The Oxnard shooting guard, had 24 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and four steals against former Ventura High teammates Paul Batausa and Mike Melonas, who both started for VC.
The Condors (10-11), had to come back from a 14 point deficit with 17 minutes to play, to improve to 3-3 in the Western State Conference’s North Division. They did this by making 17 of 22 free throws, including 11 straight down the stretch. In overtime, Scooter Holmes made a pair of jumpers to match buckets by Barrera and Harris before Ennis free throws built an 84-82 Oxnard edge

Lady Condors Dominate Pierce
January 23—Woodland Hills
Nicki Tauaau, Arlene Cortez, and Shaniqua Perkins (pictured below)came up huge against Pierce College on Saturday night. In the newly renovated Brahma Gym, Tauaau had 20 points, eight boards, and three steals to lead Oxnard to a 69-55 win over Pierce. Arlene Cortez had a double-double with 14 points and 13 boards, while Perkins cut through the Brahma defense for 13 points and came up with three steals of her own.
Coach Phil Sherman was happy to see his team get a solid offensive performance. “Our defense pressure leads to many turnovers, but we haven’t been converting like we should.” The Lady Condors made the most of their steals, and showed offensive efficiency shooting over 50 percent from the floor. They stretched the lead to 24 points midway through the second half, and coasted to a 14 point victory. Oxnard’s overall record is 12-6, and 3-2 in the WSC.
The women and men play in a huge cross-county rivalry game on Wednesday, against Ventura College. The game is at the Condor Center, with tip-off set at 5 for the ladies, and 7 for the men.

Condors Fall to Pierce
January 23—Woodland Hills
Despite 21 points from Ryan McLucas and 20 points from James Ennis, the Condors fell 71-66 to host Los Angeles Pierce on Saturday night in the first game at renovated Brahma Gym.
“Turnovers down the stretch,” said McLucas. “That’s what hurt us.”
With a chance to pull within one loss of first-place Moorpark, following the Raiders’ win over previous leader Cuesta on Saturday afternoon, Oxnard could only muster one field goal during an eight-minute span down the stretch.
“The door was open and we just closed it on ourselves,” said McLucas. “We felt it. We knew it.”
Oxnard was playing without starting forward Craig Lee, who suffered a hairline nose fracture in practice Thursday.
Behind a game-high 11 points from McLucas, Oxnard was within 34-33 at the half. McLucas buried a 3-pointer to pull the Condors even, 53-53, with 8:40 to play.
But that would be the Condors’ final field goal until McLucas’ layup with 14.9 seconds left. Oxnard led 56-53 with 7:37 to play after one free throw by Scooter Holmes (10 points) and two by Gerald Pitts.(VC Star)
Oxnard Men Get Much Needed Win at Santa Barbara
January 20—Santa Barbara
Trailing by 13 points with 12 minutes to play, the Condors kept its season alive by ripping off runs of 14-3 and 15-3 to get back in the game. Then, with the game tied 73-73 in the final minute, Gerald Pitts (pictured) and Scooter Holmes each made a pair of free throws as Oxnard stopped its two-game losing streak with a 77-73 win at Santa Barbara
City.
The win enabled Oxnard (9-10, 2-2), which had nearly dug out of 12-point holes with five minutes to play twice last week in losses to Cuesta and Moorpark, to stay within two games of first-place Cuesta in the loss column.
"We started out the game with four straight turnovers," said Oxnard assistant coach Jeff Perrault. "It was unreal, but we really shared the ball in the second half, getting dunks, open shots and layups"
Holmes had a team-high 23 points, James Ennis had 21 points and Ryan McLucas had 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Reserve Jason Townsley also came off the bench to contribute some solid minutes, making a first-half 3-pointer that helped pull the Condors within 36-30 at the break. (VC Star)
Lady Condors Lose Tough Battle
January 20--Santa Barbara
The Oxnard College Lady Condors fell 65-55 at Santa Barbara on Wednesday night. They fell behind early, in a back and forth battle which was not decided until the waning minutes of the game. A strong effort by Arlene Cortez with 16 points and seven boards, and Takara Prezzie with nine points, kept the contest close. The Condors led by three after battling back from an early deficit, with six minutes remaining. The Vaqueros made a 12-2 run with three minutes remaining to take the lead. Oxnard’s record dropped to 11-6 overall, and 2-2 in the WSC
Oxnard Loses Two Tough Games to Moorpark
The Lady Condors battled the whole game, but just couldn't hit the shots to win the game.In the 64-60 loss to Moorpark College, Nicki Tauau had 11 points, Takara Prezzie tossed in 10 points, and Shaniqua Bradley added seven points for the Condors. The loss put the Lady Condors at 11-5 overall, and 2-1 in WSC play.
The men had a similar struggle with the Raiders, going down 77-72. James Ennis had 21 points and 6 rebounds for Oxnard. Spencer Holmes had 15 points and 8 rebounds and Ryan McLucas added 11 points for the Condors. The Condors went on a 14-1 run in the second half, but too little too late for the home team. The loss left them at 8-10 overall, and 1-2 in the WSC.
Both teams go on the road next week to face Santa Barbara City College. The action tips off at 5 p.m. for the women and 7 p.m. for the men.
Condors Split with Cuesta
January 13 – Oxnard
The Lady Condors jumped on the Cougars right from the start of their WSC matchup Wednesday night. Oxnard started the game with an 18-0 run, and cruised to a 52-22 victory. The Condors employed a terrific trapping defense that led to many transition baskets. Danikha Edwards (above) had 11 points and Shaniqua Perkins added 10 points. Coach Phil Sherman has guarded optimism about the win, but is obviously happy about the effort his student-athletes are giving right now. The win put the Condors at 11-4 overall, and 2-0 in conference.
The men’s team lost a hard-fought battle with Cuesta College. Scooter
(pictured) Holmes had 24 points, Ryan McLucas had 22 points and James Ennis had 14 points as the Condors battled back from a 13-point deficit with five minutes to play. In the end, Oxnard’s 1 of 20 performance from 3-point range was too much to overcome. The final was 76-74 to put the Condors at 8-9 overall, and 1-1 in the WSC.
Come out and cheer for the Condors Saturday at the Condor Center. The women’s game starts at 5 p.m. with the men tipping off at 7 p.m. against Moorpark College. General admission is $5, seniors $3, and students and employees free with ID.

January 9 – Santa Maria
The Oxnard Lady Condor basketball team won on the road, 75-50 over the Hancock Bulldogs. The Condors came with a balanced attack all evening, pulling out to a 16 point lead at halftime. Nicki Tauau (left) had 13 points to go with 6 boards, Shaniqua Perkins had 10 points and 3 assists, Arlene Cortez had 9 points and 12 rebounds and Stephanie Hernandez had 9 points. Oxnard trailed 82-79 with 1:13 to play when the sophomore from Rio Mesa High buried a pair of jumpers, including a 3-pointer. McLucas also had eight rebounds and eight assists.

Oxnard Ladies Struggle Against Canyons
Despite taking an early 6-0 lead, the Lady Condors had a tough time against visiting College of the Canyons at the Condor Complex. Coco Bradley led the way for the Condors (9-4), with 14 points, and Nikki Tauau had 9, but Canyons had too much transition offense. The majority of the Cougars points came in transition and from the beyond the 3-point line. The 78-48 loss was by far the Condors worst of the season.
The Lady Condors will have some time to work on some things as their next game isn't until they play Hancock, January 9th, in Santa Maria.
Anyone who has a ticket stub from this game, will receive free addmission to tonight's Men's Basketball game against Compton. Tip-off is at 5:00.

The Condors beat previously ranked number 3, Antelope Valley earlier in the year, and now number one. Coach Cunningham understands it is important for this team to develop consistency that will lead wins over teams they expect to beat.

Condors Bring Home Hoops Hardware
Oxnard defeated Hancock 64-55 in the Bulldog Classic championship game between Western State Conference rivals at Hancock’s Joe White Memorial Gymnasium.
The Condors (9-3) snapped the Bulldogs’ winning streak at two games. Hancock (3-8) was in the championship game of its own tournament for the first time since 2000.
Tournament MVP Arlene Cortez (left) had another strong game. The 5-10 sophomore center led four Condors in double figures with 19 points and seven rebounds.
“Oxnard is a very strong team, very balanced,” very positive comments from Hancock’s Head Coach Sheri Bates.
The All-Tournament Team included MVP Cortez and Stephanie Hernandez of Oxnard.
The Condors were 26-for-61 from the field, thanks mainly to Cortez going 8-for-12 from the field. Shaniqua Perkins hit five of her nine shots for13 points for Oxnard. Hernandez and Nicole Tauau, who made some timely defensive plays in the second half, added 10 points each.
Oxnard out-rebounded Hancock 37-27. Perkins both pulled down seven rebounds. Teammate Coco Bradley had six. (Santamariatimes.com)

The Oxnard Men’s basketball team finished second in the Santa Barbara Invitational. They lost an exciting game against Barstow 67-72.
The Condors (5-6) started slow in the first half, struggling to cover the Vikings 3-point shooting. After trailing by as much as 17 points, the Condors made a great run. Ryan McLucas and Gerald Pitts tightened up the defense while James Ennis, Craig Lee and Scooter Holmes got the Condors to within 3 points. A tough travelling violation on a potential game-tying fast break ended Oxnard’s comeback bid.
The Condors claimed Second-Place, after winning the Championship last year.
The Oxnard College women’s basketball team also reached the final of the Hancock College Invitational. They will face the host college at 5 pm in Santa Maria for the title, after defeating the East LA Lady Huskies. The Condors led 28-14 at the half, with the final 57-43. The defense turned over ELAC 28 times. Coach Phil Sherman commented “The girls are becoming resilient in attitude. They are receiving many compliments about the way the team is playing.” GO CONDORS!
