Rodriguez Strikes Out 15, Condors Win
April 24—Oxnard
Freshman standout Casey Rodriguez (left) has certainly earned the nickname K-Rod after his 15-strikout performance against Hancock on Tuesday afternoon. Rodriguez gave up one run on five hits in eight innings of work to take down the surging Bulldogs, 4-1. Casey leads the state in strikeouts per innings pitched.
Westley Wright ripped two doubles (2-2 on the day) while Kevin Minjares added two hits of his own. Michael Griffith and David Vansomeren also collected hits for OC.
OC is 15-10 overall and 7-11 in WSC Play.
Oxnard looks to play spoiler against Santa Barbara on Thursday at SBCC. First pitch is at 2:30. They finish the season at the Condors nest, on Friday at 2:30.
Lady Condors Split with Cuesta
April 24—San Luis Obispo
Game One:
The already short-handed Condor softball squad traveled to San Luis to take on Cuesta College in their final games of the season. Despite playing without their starting shortstop Sarah Mendez, OC took game one, 5-3.
Heather Bacon helped OC with her bat with two hits for the Condors. She singled in the third inning and homered in the seventh inning, chalking up two RBI’s in the process. Dani Hernandez was 1 for 2, with two walks and 2 RBI’s.
Oxnard relied on Janai Shaw to eat up innings en route to the win. Shaw only allowed two earned runs, six hits and two walks while striking out four over seven innings of work.
Cuesta jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
OC came back, scoring three runs in the fifth on a two-run double by Dani Hernandez and an RBI single by Kayla Mochizuki.
Game Two:
In game two, Kandice Amaro did all she could to give Oxnard College Softball a boost, but it wasn't enough to get past the Cougars. OC fell 5-1 in seven innings.
Amaro was perfect at the dish, going 2-2. She singled in the first inning and doubled in the third inning.
Janai Shaw, Heather Bacon, and Dani Hernandez had the only other hits for OC.
The split ended the Condors WSC record at 9-9 and 15-19 overall.

Condors Lose to Hancock
April 21—Santa Maria
The Condor bats were silent against Allan Hancock College on Saturday, as they fell 6-0 to the Bulldogs.
Jordan Yallen collected the only hit for OC as they struggled to figure out AHC starting pitcher.
The loss dropped OC to 6-11 in the WSC and 14-19 overall. They have a chance to avenge the loss on Tuesday when AHC comes to the Condors Nest at 2:30.
Condor Softball Has a Great Week
April 17/19—Oxnard
Game One (OC 1-Pierce 0)
Heather Bacon (pic) dominated the Pierce College Brahmas in game one by pitching a no-hitter with only a hit batter and a walk keeping her from a perfect game. Bacon tallied 9 strike outs in her seven innings of work. The Condors backed her up with a good defense.
OC also had five hits in the game, with Kandice Amaro singling in the only run of the game in the sixth inning, scoring Sara Mendez. Kayla Mochizuki was 2 for 3 with a double to deep left center.
Game Two (OC 3-Pierce 0)
Bacon backed up her sterling no-no in game one, by pitching a shutout in game two. OC came away with a 3-0 win. It was a great day for bacon as she went 14 shutout innings. In the second game she pitched seven innings, allowing only five hits and striking out six Brahmas.
Kayla Mochizuki (left) continued her terrific hitting and defense behind home plate. She had a double and a single with two RBI’s at the dish, and called a great game for Bacon.
4-19—Oxnard 5-Hancock 2
“Heather Bacon must have been tired from her yeoman-like effort on Tuesday, but pitched a brilliant game against Hancock,” said assistant coach Todd Prieto. Bacon scattered seven hits with five strike outs, and four walks. Bacon only allowed one earned run on the day as the Lady Condors prevailed 5-2.
The Condors got on the board early with Kandice Amaro doubling in two runs in the first inning. Vanessa Pulido (left) doubled and scored the winning run in the second inning.
The team was determined not to lose their final home game on Sophomore Day. They showed their true potential and avenged their earlier losses to Hancock from a couple weeks ago.
Oxnard will finish their season on the road next week against Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo. The double-header begins at 1:00.
Condors Fall in 13 Innings
April 19—Ventura
After beating Ventura College 9-2 on Tuesday, the Condor baseball squad struggled with prosperity. They battled cross-county rival VC, only to fall 4-2, in 13 innings at Ventura College.
Sheldon Ekstrand pitched nine strong innings, only giving up two runs on seven hits. Cody Kurz pitched three and took the loss.
Jordan Yallen (left) was the only Condor to figure out the Pirate pitching, going 3-5 at the plate, with 2 doubles and a run scored.
OC is back in action on Saturday at Santa Maria to take on Hancock College. First pitch is at 1:00.
Condors Take Down VC
April 17—Oxnard
It has been an up and down season for the proud Oxnard College baseball team. After a difficult 12-2 loss at Moorpark on Monday, OC rebounded in a big way against rival Ventura College on Tuesday.
The Condors scored five runs in the second inning to beat VC, 9-2. “It’s always nice to beat those guys,” said head coach Jon Larson with a smile after the game.
Aaron Landeros (pic) and Westley Wright both collected four hits on the day. Jordan Yallen and Kevin Minjares each had two hits as OC pounded out 15 on the day. Ventura’s five pitchers struggled against OC’s entire lineup, with Oxnard avenging a loss to the Pirates on March 17th.
David Barroso picked up his third win of the season, allowing only one earned run.
Oxnard travels to VC on Thursday with the first pitch slated for 2:30. OC is now 14-17 overall and 6-9 in the WSC, moving a game ahead of VC in conference play.
Softball Loses to SBCC, 4-0
April 12—Santa Barbara
The Lady Condor Softball Team was looking to keep up with the leaders in the WSC, but dropped a 4-0 contest to the Lady Vaqueros on Thursday.
Battling the injury bug, the team struggled at the plate with only two hits on the day. Kayla Mochizuki and Sarah Mendez were both 1 for 3.
Heather Bacon pitched well, allowing only one hit, but SBCC was able to score three times in the first inning. Janai Shaw pitched two innings of no-run relief, but the Condors were unable to mount a comeback.
The loss dropped OC to 5-8 in the WSC with a double header against Pierce College on Tuesday. First pitch is at 1:00 at the Condor’s Nest.
Condor Bats Go Silent
April 12—Oxnard
The Condor Baseball Team had won six straight games, including two over first place Cuesta. Nick Rogowski and the Moorpark Raiders ended that streak with a 2-0 win over OC on Thursday afternoon.
Sheldon Ekstrand (left)pitched a fine 8 innings allowing only two runs on nine hits. Cody Kurz pitched a scoreless ninth inning, but OC was only 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position.
Westley Wright, Sean Houlihan and Rey Reyes all had hits for Oxnard. But Rogowski was able to keep the Condors off-balance. “He has pitched great ballgames against us,” said Jon Larson, OC’s head coach. Rogowski shut out the Condors in their March 10th matchup as well.
Before the contest, OC’s coaching staff (Jon Larson, Roger Frash, Steve Hernandez, and Geno Beville) presented Moorpark head coach Mario Porto with a plaque and pictures for the 23 years of service to Moorpark College Baseball.
OC is now 5-8 in WSC play, with the turnaround game schedule for 1:00 at Moorpark College on Saturday.
Oxnard Softball Struggles vs. Moorpark
April 10—Oxnard
Game 1:
Moorpark's eighth inning charge helped the Raiders beat OC, 5-1.
Moorpark took the lead in the eighth inning, on several Oxnard miscues in the eighth inning. Moorpark didn't relinquish the lead after scoring four runs on an error, a fielder's choice, a passed ball, and a groundout.
The Condors’ Heather Bacon (left)showed good command all day, as she threw strikes on 92 of her 146 pitches. Bacon collected six strikeouts and walked two for Oxnard College Softball.
OC's lone run of the ballgame came in the sixth inning on an RBI double by Kayla Mochizuki.
Game 2:
Kayla Mochizuki (left) continued to be hot at the plate going 3 for 3, with a double and a run scored. Her efforts behind the plate and with the bat were not enough for the Condors as they fell 4-3.
After getting into a 4-0 hole in the first inning, OC mounted a comeback. They scored runs in the first, third, and sixth inning, but fell short.
Heather Bacon pitched very well in relief of Janai Shaw, allowing only 1 hit and racking up 7 strikeouts.
Kandice Amaro and Vanessa Pulido added hits for Oxnard who fell to 5-7 in WSC play, after their split with Ventura last week.
OC looks to get back on track against second place SBCC on Thursday at Santa Barbara. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30.
Condors Double Dip Cuesta
March 31—Oxnard
Oxnard College baseball is on a three game win streak following their 7-4 victory over 2nd-ranked Cuesta College on Saturday.
Angel Navarro (pic) came in the 4th inning to relieve starter David Barroso. He got out of a huge jam in the fourth, and pitched 1-run ball through 4 and 2/3 innings. He gave up 4 hits, and kept the Cougars off balance, allowing the Condor bats to come alive.
Aaron Landeros continued his hot-hitting going 3 for 5, with a huge 2-out double, scoring Westley Wright and Jordan Yallen in the eighth inning. Landeros had 3 RBI’s in the game. David Vansomeren went 2 for 3 with 2 doubles, 2 runs scored, and a sacrifice bunt. Jose Hernandez was 2 for 4 with a big HR, to ignite a Condor comeback. He drove in three runs overall.
Cody Kurz came in throwing 94 MPH to shut down any Cougar comeback bid.
Oxnard is now 10-15 on the year and 5-7 in the WSC. They will host Pasadena on Monday at 2:00 in the Condors Nest.

Condors Soar to Victory over Top-Ranked Cuesta
March 29—San Luis Obispo
The surging Condor baseball team traveled to San Luis Obispo on Thursday to play the number two-ranked team in Southern California. They defeated the Cougars 8-7.
The Condors jumped out to an 8-2 lead after scoring four runs in the 5th inning. Westley Wright continued his terrific season going 2/5 with 3 RBI’s. Aaron Landeros (pic) led the team with four hits, including a double.
Sheldon Ekstrand got the victory on the mound, going 8 innings, while only allowing two earned runs. Cody Kurz pitched the 9th inning for his second save in three days.
Oxnard plays Cuesta again on Saturday at 1:00 in the Condors Nest. Their record is now 4-7 in the WSC.
Shaw Lifts Condors to Victory
March 29—Oxnard
The Lady Condor softball squad got a huge 1-0 victory over Cuesta College on Thursday afternoon. The Condor’s Nest saw Janai Shaw (pic) toe the rubber for OC, in place of team ace Heather Bacon.
Shaw pitched a complete game shutout, holding Cuesta to only three hits on the day. She pitched with poise all afternoon, and her defense played well behind her. Tina Tran, Paulina Ruiz, and Ceselley Montano played well in the outfield, as did OC’s infield, to go error-free on the day.
Shaw had Oxnard’s only hit of the day (triple), but that is all the Condors needed. Sarah Mendez picked her up in the 5th inning, and Cuesta was unable to match the run in the 6th or 7th inning.
The win got OC back to 4-4 in the WSC and 10-13 overall. The Condors will play on Saturday in the VC Invitational.
Condor Baseball Splits with SBCC
March 24/27—SBCC/OC
Game 1
The Condors are desperate for WSC wins, but were defeated last Saturday in Santa Barbara 9-4.
Westley Wright (pic) continues to lead the Condor offense. He blasted an HR to put OC up 2 runs out of the gate. Unfortunately, the Condor defense and pitching struggled. Billy Conard gave up five hits and his defense threw the ball around allowing SBCC to score 8 runs through 4 innings.
David Vansomeren went 2-4 at the plate, while Angel Navarro shut down the Vaquero offense for the rest of the game.
The loss put OC at 2-7 in WSC play.
Game 2
On Tuesday, Oxnard played a fine game of baseball. The pitching and defense held SBCC to five hits and zero runs, for their first shutout of the season. The Condors climbed back into playoff contention with a 4-0 win.
Casey Rodriguez, Daniel Lerma, and Cody Kurz combined for the shutout. Westley Wright, Aaron Landeros, and Kevin Minjares (pic) led the Condors in hits and RBI’s.
With the second through last place teams in the WSC within two games of each other, Oxnard just needs to play Condor baseball. They face top-ranked Cuesta College Thursday at 2:30 in San Luis Obispo with an opportunity to climb back in to a post-season berth.
Lady Condors Miss Chance at Hancock
March 27—Santa Maria
Game One
The Oxnard College women’s softball team went to Hancock College in second place in the WSC Gold Division.
In game one, Hancock escape an OC rally, and won 3-1.
The Condors were unable to fight back after falling behind by three runs in the sixth inning. Oxnard scored one run in the seventh, but it was not enough
Heather Bacon (pic) had great control, as she threw strikes on 57 of her 103 pitches. Bacon collected nine strike outs and walked four for Oxnard.
Sarah Mendez and Ceselley Montano were 1 for 2, and Vanessa Pulido finished 1-3. Kandice Amaro was 1-3 with a run scored and Kayla Mochizuki was 1-3 with the Condors only RBI.
Game Two
The Condors got a great game from Janai Shaw (pic) but it was not enough in an 11-8 loss to the Bulldogs.
The Condors failed to take advantage of Shaw's effort at the plate on Wednesday. Shaw hit two home runs for OC, going 3-4 in the game with two RBIs and three runs scored. Shaw homered in the second and seventh innings.
The top of the first saw OC take an early lead, 3-0. Heather Bacon singled and scored Shaw. The scoreboard lit up again for OC when Stephanie Villalobos and Kandice Amaro scored on an RBI single by Kayla Mochizuki.
The teams traded runs for most of the contest, leading to seven lead changes in the game. Hancock finally managed to grab the lead after a strong sixth inning.
Both squads had things going at the plate, tallying 19 runs and 28 hits, including eight extra base hits.
The two losses dropped OC to 3-4 in the WSC and 9-13 overall. “We have some injuries to overcome as a team,” commented assistant coach Todd Prieto. The ladies will have a chance to show their toughness on Thursday vs. Cuesta College at 2:30 p.m.
Condor Softball Soars at Pierce
March 22—Woodland Hills
Janai Shaw(pic) had two extra base hits, including a home run and a triple, helping Oxnard College softball to a 7-2 victory over LA Pierce on Friday.
Shaw racked up four RBIs on two hits for the Condors. Shaw homered in the fourth inning and tripled in the sixth inning, while going 5 innings to get the win.
Shaw kept the ball around the plate, throwing strikes on 49 of her 72 pitches. Shaw collected six strike outs and walked two for Oxnard College Softball.
Heather Bacon, who allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out five during two innings of relief.
Oxnard led the entire game. They scored one run in the second, added four in the fourth, and stretched the lead with two runs in the sixth.
Vanessa Pulido was 2-3 with 2 RBI’s and 1 run, Kandice Amaro was 1-2 with 2 runs, Ceselley Montano was 1-2 with 1 run, and Kayla Mochizuki was 1-2.
The Lady Condors are now 3-2 in the WSC, and are back in action March 27th for a double header at Hancock College. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00.
OC Baseball Improves in WSC
March 22—Oxnard
The Condors defeated Allan Hancock College for the second time in three days 8-4.
Sheldon Ekstrand (2-4) pitched very well for OC, going 7 strong innings, allowing only 2 earned runs, while striking out 7 Bulldogs.
Pepe Hernandez was 2-4, with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored, Cody Kurz was 2-4 with 1 RBI, Aaron Landeros was 1-3 with 2 RBI’s, and Daniel Lerma was 1-3 with 1 RBI.
There were many scouts at the Condor’s Nest to watch Oxnard get their second WSC win. OC travels to Santa Barbara on Saturday at 1:00.
Condors Fall to VC
March 21—Ventura
In a rainout makeup game, Oxnard baseball traveled to cross-county rival Ventura College and fell 7-4.
Westley Wright was 1-4, with 1 run and 1 RBI, Pepe Hernandez was 1-3 with 2 walks, Jordan Yallen had 1 hit and 1 RBI.
Casey Rodriguez (1-3) went 5 innings and gave up 4 runs, striking out 11 Pirates, in a losing effort. Angel Navarro pitched well in relief for the Condors, facing 9 batters, without giving up an ER.
On a side note, OC turned a triple play in the game.
OC Baseball Gets Off the Schneid, 8-7
March 20—Santa Maria
Oxnard baseball had to have this win and they got it by beating Allan Hancock College 8-7.
Cody Kurz (pic) and Westley Wright provided the punch for OC by going 3-4 and 3-5, respectively. Kurz hit a giant home run to bring the Condors from behind in the eighth inning. He also contributed by pitching 2 innings of scoreless relief for the save. Wright continued his production at the plate with a home run and two runs scored.
Ruben Gomez and Mo Griffith came up with clutch hits off the bench to give the Condors their first WSC victory.
“We have one in a row…We are now on a streak that we hope to continue at Ventura,” commented Jon Larson.
Oxnard faces VC at 2:30 today, with Casey Rodriguez on the hill.
Condor Softball Splits Two With Santa Barbara
March 20—Oxnard
Game One:
Kayla Mochizuki (pic) had a good game at the plate as she spurred Oxnard College to a 3-0 victory over Santa Barbara in seven innings at Oxnard College on Wednesday.
Mochizuki had two RBIs on two hits for OC as she singled in the second and fifth innings.
Heather Bacon (6-4) kept the Vaqueros off the scoreboard for all seven innings. She earned a shutout win, allowing no opposing players to cross the plate on three hits while ringing up seven. Bacon also collected two hits in the game.
Dani Hernandez, Mochizuki, Janai Shaw, and Bacon each got hits for the Condors.
Game Two:
Despite a hit advantage (4-3), OC dropped game two, 3-2 to SBCC.
The Condors weren’t able to push enough runs across the plate to get the win, despite Heather Bacon going the distance. Bacon was a workhorse for OC on the rubber, allowing one earned run, three hits and three walks while striking out five.
Sarah Mendez, Kandice Amaro, Kayla Mochizuki, and Vanessa Pulido all had hits for the Lady Condors.
Oxnard evened their WSC record to 2-2 and 8-11 on the season. The ladies face off against Pierce College on Thursday in Woodland Hills, starting at 2:30.
Oxnard College Softball first-inning burst enough to top Moorpark, 8-0
Oxnard College softball rolled over Moorpark 8-0 on Friday at Moorpark, after a five-run rally in the first inning.
Janai Shaw (pic) had a strong game at the plate for OC. Shaw went 2-4, drove in one and scored two runs. Shaw singled in the first inning and homered in the fifth inning.
Heather Bacon threw seven innings of scoreless ball for the Condors.
Bacon kept the ball around the plate, throwing strikes on 67 of her 114 pitches. She collected five strike outs and walked one for the win.
OC tacked on another two runs in the seventh. Sarah Mendez singled, plating Ceselley Montano to kick things off, and was followed up by a groundout by Dani Hernandez that scored Tina Tran.
Oxnard evened its record in the WSC to 1-1. The Lady Condors play Santa Barbara on Tuesday at the Condor’s Nest. The first pitch of the double-header is slated for 1:00.
OC Baseball Bats Silent in County
March 10—Oxnard
David Barroso only allowed three runs over 6 1/3 innings and struck out four Raiders, but his effort was not enough as OC lost 4-0. Condor relievers Tyler Abbot, Josh Grajeda, and Cody Kurz pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings.
Nick Rogowski cruised to a complete-game shutout for Moorpark.
Aaron Landeros was OC’s bright spot at the plate, going 3-4.
March 13—Moorpark
Again, OC struggled to score runs, dropping a 2-1 game at Moorpark College.
Casey Rodriguez gave up two runs while David Lerma and Cody Kurz held Moorpark scoreless in relief.
Jose Hernandez was 2-2 with 2 walks and David VanSomeren was 1-3.
March 15—Oxnard
After three games against WSC cross-coutny rivals Moorpark and Ventura, OC has only managed two runs.
The Condors fell 4-1 in the Condors Nest to a fired-up Ventura squad.
Sheldon Ekstrand pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up 0 earned runs and striking out 5 pirates. Joey Contreras pitched a complete-game for the win for VC.
Jose Hernandez and Sean Houlihan had 2 hits each.
Head coach Jon Larson said after the three-game stretch “we are starting to make (the opposing pitchers) look like Sandy Koufax…”
The Condors welcomed the rain on Saturday. They play at Hancock on Tuesday looking to get in the WSC win column.
Oxnard College Softball is Upended by VC, 3-1
The OC lady softball squad was unable to muster a comeback in Ventura after VC took the lead in the sixth inning of Thursday’s battle, losing 3-1 in seven innings.
Oxnard’s Kandice Amaro (left) was perfect at the dish, going 2-2. Amaro doubled in the fourth inning and singled in the sixth inning.
Heather Bacon was a workhorse in the circle for the Condors. Bacon allowed no earned runs, seven hits and no walks while striking out four. Errors continued to plague the Condors as they committed four on the afternoon, leading to the three Ventura runs.
OC scored its only run (Vanessa Pulido) of the game on an RBI single by Kayla Mochizuki in the sixth inning.
Oxnard is 0-1 in the WSC and will play at Moorpark on March 15th at 2:30.
Oxnard Drops Two to Cuesta
March 6/8—SLO/Oxnard
The Condors went up to San Luis Obispo on Tuesday and dropped their opening WSC contest to the Cougars, 9-5.
Jose Hernandez (above) went 3-4 with two RBI’s, Westley Wright was 2-4 with a double, and RBI, and two runs scored.
Bobby Diaz and Josh Grajeda pitched 4 1/3 innings of relief, and only gave up 1 earned run.
The loss was OC’s first of the WSC season.
Thursday, March 08
Oxnard looked to get even with Cuesta on Thursday afternoon, but unfortunately dropped their second in a row, 8-1.
The Condors were led by Aaron Landeros (left) going 2-4, with Westley Wright going 1-4 with the only Oxnard run. Mo Griffith was 1-1 and finished up behind the plate.
The Condor relievers of Tyler Abbot, Bobby Diaz, and Angel Navarro pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
The Condors are now 5-10 on the season and 0-2 in the WSC. They look to get back on track against cross-county rival Moorpark College at the Condor’s Nest on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 1:00.
Softball Has Split Results
March 1-4, Bakersfield/Huntington Beach
Thursday, March 1st—
The Oxnard softball team lost 8-1 to Bakersfield College.
The Condor defense did not play well allowing seven errors and eight runs.
Heather Bacon (pic) accounted for the only run for OC with a home run. Bacon also pitched well, giving up only two earned runs. Janai Shaw had a double to lead off for OC, but they failed to score.
Friday, March2nd—
East LA defeated the Condors 8-3.
Oxnard committed seven errors in the game, and despite Janai Shaw pitching well, OC was unable to overcome the mistakes.
Both teams had nine hits, with Sarah Mendez (left) and Janai Shaw collecting three and two, respectively.
“The ladies were tired, and it showed,” commented assistant coach Todd Prieto.
Oxnard defeated Southwest College 17-3.
The Condors came back to mercy-rule Southwest College in the afternoon game. Heather Bacon pitched well to get the win.
Janai Shaw stayed hot at the plate, going 3-4 as did Heather Bacon and Sarah Mendez. Kayla Mochizuki also continued to swing a big bat, going 2-3 in the game.
“We only committed one error in the game and the ladies had much more fun,” said Todd Prieto.
Saturday, March 3rd—
Oxnard Defeated San Bernardino Valley College 10-0.
Janai Shaw (left)went 3-3 at the plate with 2 RBI’s, 3 runs scored, and a home run. Sarah Mendez was 2-3 with 2 RBI’s, Dani Hernandez also had 2 RBI’s. Kayla Mochizuki was 2-3, with a triple, Kandice Amaro was also 2-3 with an RBI and run scored.
Sunday, March 4th—
Despite out-hitting Santa Barbara, Oxnard College drops 7-2 game to the Vaqueros.
Sarah Mendez boosted her batting average, thanks to a perfect 4-4 day at the plate, to pace OC. Mendez singled in the first, third, fifth, and seventh innings.
Santa Barbara added two more runs in the top of the fifth.
After pushing across two runs in the bottom of the fifth, the Condors faced just a 5-2 deficit, and looked to comeback. Unfortunately, Oxnard was unable to get key hits in the final innings, and fell to SBCC to drop their last pre-conference game.
They will face off against cross-county rival Ventura College on Thursday at VC. The first pitch is at 2:30.
Oxnard Winning Streak Ends
March 3—Long Beach
After scoring 47 runs in a four-game winning streak, the Condors only managed two runs, in a 4-2 loss at Long Beach.
David Barroso (pic) pitched well in seven innings, giving up only four hits and one earned run to the Vikings. Westley Wright led the game off with a triple, but OC was unable to convert it into a run. Jose Hernandez was 2 for 4 with a double, and Kevin Minjares was 1 for 3, with two walks.
Oxnard finished their pre-conference schedule at 5-8. They play in San Luis Obispo to start WSC play on Tuesday, with the first pitch at 2:00.
Condors Streak to 7-1 Win Over LBCC
March 1—Oxnard
The Condor baseball team is on a four game winning streak. OC had nine hits to the Vikings six, and tallied seven runs to take down LBCC 7-1.
Sheldon Ekstrand (pic) pitched 8 innings, giving up five hits and no earned runs. He also struck out four Vikings for his well-deserved first win of the season. Tyler Abbot came in to pitch one inning of scoreless relief, striking out two in the process.
Cody Kurz was 2 for 3, with 2 RBI’s and a run scored. David VanSomeren was 2 for 4, 2 runs scored and 2 stolen bases. Kevin Minjares was 2 for 5, with 2 RBI, one run scored and two stolen bases. Westley Wright was 2 for 5 with a run scored.
The Condors will have a rematch with the Vikings on Saturday at 1:00, in Long Beach.
OC has now improved to 5-7 on the season.
Condors Stay Hot, Defeat LA Mission 9-1
February 28—Oxnard
The Condor bats continued to sizzle, and the pitching remained solid as OC pounded LA Mission 9-1 on Tuesday.
Casey Rodriguez (1-1, pic) cruised to his first collegiate victory, pitching 6 innings, giving up only one run on four hits and a “quality start” for OC. Billy Conard and Cody Kurz came in and provided a shut down three innings for the Condors as well.
Sophomore standout short stop Kevin Minjares was 4 for 6, with an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base. Westley Wright was 3-6, with a triple, a double, an RBI and a run scored. Kurz added 2 hits of his own, with an RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base.
The Condors are on a three game winning streak to put their record at 4-7. They will face Long Beach CC on Thursday at 2:00, in the Condor’s Nest.
Condors Score 14 Runs in Rout of Citrus
February 23—Glendora
It was only a matter of time before the once top 20 ranked OC Condor baseball team started hitting. They did just that on Thursday against Citrus College by pounding out 18 hits. The Condors avenged a loss at the Condor’s Nest on Thursday to the Owls, with a 14-4 victory.
Westley Wright (pic) went 4/5 with 3 runs scored, 2 RBI’s and a double. David VanSomeren was 3/5 with 3 runs scored and 4 RBI’s, Kevin Minjares was 3/6 with 3 RBI’s and a steal, Cody Kurz was 2/6 with an HR, and Aaron Landeros was 3/4 with a RBI and a run scored.
Sheldon Ekstrand went six innings to earn his first win of the year.
“It was nice to see our players with a better plan at the plate,” commented head coach Jon Larson.
The Condors look to continue their hot hitting on Saturday against Pasadena City College at 1:00.
Softball Dominates Santa Monica
February 21—Oxnard
The Lady Condor softball team is starting to put everything together. The Santa Monica Corsairs visited the Condor’s Nest on Tuesday in a non-conference game. They left with only two hits and no runs, to fall to OC 5-0.
Heather Bacon pitched another gem for Oxnard, giving up only two hits and one walk, while striking out 11 Corsairs. Freshman Tina Tran (pic) delivered a key double for OC to drive in two runs. Dani Hernandez added a single and RBI of her own.
The Oxnard defense did not commit an error all game—a first this season for the young OC ladies. “It starts behind the plate.” commented Coach Todd Prieto. “Kayla Mochizuki is a terrific catcher, and called a great game. I’m very happy with the way our team is coming together at this point.”
The win put OC at 4-4 on the season. They play Glendale at the Condor’s Nest on Thursday in a double header slated for a 12:00 first pitch.
Baseball Recap
February 16-21
It was a rough four-game stretch for the Condors as they fell to 1-7 on the season.
On Tuesday, OC’s late in inning rally was not enough to overcome a 4-0 deficit. Starting pitcher Casey Rodriguez struggled in the third inning to throw strikes which allowed the Citrus Owls to score four times. Oxnard got one run back in the bottom of the fourth, with David VanSomeren (2-4, 2 runs scored) scoring after a leadoff double. Citrus added a run in the seventh, which turned out to be the winning run.
The Condors scored in the bottom of the seventh and twice in the eighth to lose 5-4. Jose Hernandez (Above, 2-4, 2RBI’s) had a base hit, with Daniel Lerma moving him over with a hit of his own. Aaron Landeros (1-3, 1 RBI) drove in Lerma with a single. In the eighth inning Westley Wright had a single, followed by David VanSomeren’s single, and Kevin Minjares sacrificed them over to second and third. Jose Hernandez singled in two runs.
Oxnard left a runner in scoring position to finish the game in the ninth inning.

Tough losses to Moorpark
February 15—Moorpark
The Lady Condors were tied with the 14th ranked Lady Raiders early in the first half at nine apiece. That’s when they woke up and went on a scoring run to end the first half at 33-15. The Condors, playing without starting point guard Adrianna Vega, were unable to put together a second half run of their own. Ashanti Sweezer notched nine points in the 55-31 loss. OC is 1-10 in the WSC and 5-16 overall. They will finish their season in the Condors Nest against Cuesta College on Saturday night.

The Condor men’s team came out a little flat against the Raiders. Moorpark scored the first 15 points of the game, before Oxnard dropped in a bucket. The Condors showed perseverance to come back and take the lead in the second half. OC had a five point lead with four minutes remaining in the ballgame before Coltrane Powdrill tied the game with one minute left. He added a basket to give the Raiders the lead with seconds remaining. Sophomore guard, Robert Sweet had an open look at a 3-pointer to tie the game that rimmed out for the Condors. The game ended 67-64, snapping a four-game losing streak for Moorpark against Oxnard.
Jamahl Slater led OC with 15 points. Gary Johnson and Moises Barrera each scored 14 points while Stephan Thompson also scored in double figures with 10.
The men are now 10-15 and 3-8 in conference. They look to finish strong on Saturday night at 7:00 against Cuesta College. The game will be “Sophomore Night”, with a short ceremony for both the men and the women who have represented Oxnard College on the basketball court.
Condor Baseball Gets in the Win Column, 10-6
February 11—Fullerton
The Condor baseball team came alive on Saturday by pounding out 14 hits and scoring 10 runs against Fullerton College.
David Barroso got the win and most of the OC starter got hits. David Vansomeren (pic) led the charge going 3 for 4, with an RBI and stolen base. Sophomore short stop Kevin Minjares went 2 for 5, with a double and 2 runs scored. Cody Kurz, Travis Keppel, and Daniel Lerman all had two hits apiece, with Lerma chalking 3 RBI’s in the game.
The win gives the 20th-ranked team in Southern California to 1-3, with their next contest February 17th against Bakersfield in their own tournament. First pitch is at 7:00 p.m.
Bacon throws no-hitter as Oxnard College Softball defeats Victor Valley 9-0
February 11—Ventura
Heather Bacon (pic) was untouchable on Saturday, throwing a no-hitter in Oxnard College Softball's 9-0 victory over Victor Valley.
No Victor Valley batter was able to locate Bacon's pitches during the game. Bacon threw a no-hitter, striking out seven batters and walking one while recording her momentous feat.
Five runs in the opening three innings allowed OC to easily put away Victor Valley. An RBI single by Kandice Amaro, an RBI single by Bacon, in the first inning, fueled the Condor offense early.
It was a good day at the plate for Oxnard’s Dani Hernandez. Hernandez went 2-2 and scored two runs. Hernandez singled in the second inning and doubled in the fourth inning.
OC added two more runs in the bottom of the third. Kayla Mochizuki scored to start the frame. That was followed up by a ground out by Vanessa Pulido that scored Bacon.
Oxnard increased its lead with four runs in the fourth. A passed ball scored Hernandez to start the inning. That was followed up by that scored Amaro that ended the game 9-0.
The Condors moved to 2-3 on the season, with their next contest on the road against Citrus College on Valentine’s Day.
Oxnard College Softball drops 3-2 game to Citrus
February 14--Glendora
Heather Bacon had a fine game for the Lady Condors, but it wasn't enough to get past Citrus, as OC lost 3-2 in seven innings at Citrus on Tuesday.
Bacon had a busy day at the plate, collecting two extra-base hits. Bacon doubled in the fourth and seventh innings.
Bacon also struck out 11 Citrus batters. She allowed two earned runs, six hits and two walks over 6 2/3 innings.
Dani Hernandez and Kandice Amaro also added hits for Oxnard, but they could not overcome the Citrus pitching. The final of 3-2 dropped OC to 2-4 on the season, with a home game scheduled against LA Valley for 2:30 on February 16
Condors Drop Battle against VC
The men’s basketball team came out with great intensity against arch-rival Ventura College on Wednesday night.
Oxnard dropped the game 78-69, but they certainly took the usually rambunctious VC crowd out of the ball game early.
Sophomore guard Gary Johnson (pic) had a game-high 21 points and sophomore forward Jahmahl Slater added 20 points for Oxnard (10-13, 3-6). Robert Sweet added 14 points from the outside. He complimented the strong inside presence of Johnson, Slater, and Steph Thompson. Their efforts were not enough, however as VC took advantage of several offensive rebounds and a late home surge.
"We've been through a lot of adversity these last few weeks," said Oxnard coach Jason Cunningham. "We didn't want to make excuses anymore. We wanted to deal with what's happening and come out and make an effort."

The Condor Ladies had a tough time in the early game. Oxnard (6-14, 1-8), was led by 16 points from freshman point guard Adriana Vega and 10 points from freshman forward Ashanti Sweezer.
The Condors fell 76-40 as they were unable to penetrate a very tough Pirate defense.
Oxnard will be hosting Hancock College on Saturday night. The women’s game will tip-off at 5:00 and the men will be at 7:00. All proceeds will go directly to the efforts of the American Cancer society to promote lifesaving research and programs that improve the quality of life for thousands of people suffering from cancer.

Bacon's effort not enough as Oxnard Softball falls to Pasadena 2-1
February 3—Pasadena
Oxnard College's Heather Bacon (pic) struck out 10 batters, but OC provided little run support, allowing Pasadena CC to steal a 2-1 win Friday at Pasadena.
Pasadena starting pitcher Ramirez handled Oxnard’s lineup with ease, racking up four strikeouts. Pasadena's pitcher allowed one earned run, four hits and two walks over five innings.
OC's lone run of the ballgame came in the first inning.
The lead stayed with Pasadena after the fifth, when they scored one run to make the final 2-1.
Offenses dominate as Oxnard outscores Orange Coast College 10-8
February 2—Costa Mesa
The Condor softball squad and Orange Coast College lit up the scoreboard on Thursday, as they combined for 18 runs.
In the end, OC won the offensive battle, 10-8 in seven innings.
There were 22 hits, including seven extra base hits in the game. It was back-and-forth heading into the sixth, with five lead changes.
OC finally managed to grab the lead after a strong sixth inning. Orange Coast was unable to overcome a six-run seventh inning deficit.
Heather Bacon was strong on the mound, throwing strikes on 86 of her 150 pitches. She collected 11 strike outs and walked four for the Condors.
Oxnard outmuscled by Orange Coast in Game Two
Dani Hernandez (pic) did her best to will Oxnard College Softball to a win with a two-hit game, but Oxnard dropped a 9-3 contest to Orange Coast in game two of a double-header.
Hernandez had a busy day at the plate, collecting two extra-base hits, with doubles in the third and fifth innings.
Janai Shaw had it working on the rubber for OC. She allowed four earned runs over four innings. Shaw gave up nine hits while walking five and striking out two.
The top of the first saw Oxnard take an early lead, 1-0. The ladies got things going when Shaw singled. A stolen base then moved her from first to second, and on to eventually score.
The game was never in doubt after the second, however, as Orange Coast scored five runs on three singles and doubles.
After pushing across one run in the top of the third, the Condors faced just a 5-2 deficit.
An RBI double by Hernandez triggered a mini-comeback. Kayla Mochizuki grounded out to end the threat.
The Pirates piled on two more runs in the bottom of the third. One run in the top of the fifth helped OC close its deficit to 9-3.
The loss dropped the Condors to 1-2 on the season, with a trip to Pasadena on Friday. Game time is set for 2:00.
Condor Baseball Stumbles at COD Tourney
Febraury 3-5—Palm Desert
The Condors began their season on the road at the College of the Desert Baseball Tournament. They dropped three games to move to 0-3 on the young season.
OC played host COD on Friday and got a fine outing from sophomore hurler David Barroso. Barroso gave up only three hits and one run. Josh Grajeda took the loss for the Condors in relief.
Second baseman, David VanSomeren went three for five with a double and sophomore center fielder Westley Wright (pic) went two for five, in the loss.
The Condors could not get their bats going against San Bernardino on day two. After the Wolverines gave up 18 runs the day before, the Condors only managed two runs on Saturday. Wright and VanSomeren again led OC with two hits each. Wright had a double and scored Oxnard’s only two runs in the 4-2 defeat.
OC’s woes continued on Sunday as they managed only one run to Chaffey. The final was 5-1 to drop OC in an early hole. “I think our team batting average is about 100,” replied head coach Jon Larson. “We’ll get better and put in a lot of work to make sure that happens.”
OC is back in action on February 7 against Pasadena in the Condors Nest. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 and admission is free.
Oxnard College Softball Drops Opener to Antelope Valley
January 31--Oxnard
Janai Shaw (pic) had a good game at the plate, but Oxnard College Softball still fell to Antelope Valley 4-1 in seven innings on Tuesday at Oxnard College.
Shaw went 2-3, with a single in the first inning and a double in the sixth inning.
Heather Bacon handled Antelope Valley's lineup with ease, racking up eight strikeouts. She allowed two earned runs, five hits and two walks over seven innings.
OC had no answer for the AVC Pitcher, who cruised in the circle. The Condors managed just one hit off of the Antelope Valley's starting pitcher, who allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out four during her two innings of work.
The game was never in doubt after the third, as Antelope Valley scored two runs on a groundout.
OC’s one run of the ballgame came in the fourth inning.
Antelope Valley tacked on another two runs in the fifth.
The Lady Condors return to action at Orange Coast for a double header on Thursday starting at 1:00.
Condor Men and Women Lose to Pierce
January 28—Woodland Hills
The Lady Condors dropped to 1-6 in WSC play with a 59-49 loss to LA Pierce on Saturday night.
Despite getting 26 points from Martissa Contreras and 15 from point guard Dre Vega, OC was unable to match the Brahma intensity.
Ashanti Sweezer added six points and 10 boards for the Condors.
OC is back in action at home on Wednesday night against SBCC. Tipoff for the ladies is 5:00.

The men’s basketball had trouble with LA Pierce as well. They fell 77-66 despite the return of sophomore standout Stephan Thompson. Thompson threw down 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Gary Johnson put in his usual yeoman-like effort with 22 and 9.
OC looks to get back to their winning ways when they face SBCC at 7:00 on Wednesday night in the Condor’s Nest. Their WSC record is 3-4.
