Oxnard College Softball Drops Opener to Antelope Valley
January 31--Oxnard
Janai Shaw (pic) had a good game at the plate, but Oxnard College Softball still fell to Antelope Valley 4-1 in seven innings on Tuesday at Oxnard College.
Shaw went 2-3, with a single in the first inning and a double in the sixth inning.
Heather Bacon handled Antelope Valley's lineup with ease, racking up eight strikeouts. She allowed two earned runs, five hits and two walks over seven innings.
OC had no answer for the AVC Pitcher, who cruised in the circle. The Condors managed just one hit off of the Antelope Valley's starting pitcher, who allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out four during her two innings of work.
The game was never in doubt after the third, as Antelope Valley scored two runs on a groundout.
OC’s one run of the ballgame came in the fourth inning.
Antelope Valley tacked on another two runs in the fifth.
The Lady Condors return to action at Orange Coast for a double header on Thursday starting at 1:00.
Condor Men and Women Lose to Pierce
January 28—Woodland Hills
The Lady Condors dropped to 1-6 in WSC play with a 59-49 loss to LA Pierce on Saturday night.
Despite getting 26 points from Martissa Contreras and 15 from point guard Dre Vega, OC was unable to match the Brahma intensity.
Ashanti Sweezer added six points and 10 boards for the Condors.
OC is back in action at home on Wednesday night against SBCC. Tipoff for the ladies is 5:00.
*****
The men’s basketball had trouble with LA Pierce as well. They fell 77-66 despite the return of sophomore standout Stephan Thompson. Thompson threw down 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Gary Johnson put in his usual yeoman-like effort with 22 and 9.
OC looks to get back to their winning ways when they face SBCC at 7:00 on Wednesday night in the Condor’s Nest. Their WSC record is 3-4.
Cuesta Downs Oxnard in SLO
January 25—San Luis Obispo
It’s always tough to take a long road trip and start a game strong. This certainly was true for the Lady Condors on Wednesday night as they traveled to San Luis Obispo to face the Cuesta Cougars.
Oxnard fell behind early and was unable to come back in historical fashion as they did against Hancock. The final score was 71-59, with OC holding Cuesta to only 25 points in the second half.
Maritssa Contreras (pic) netted a season-high 18 points in the loss. Ashanti Sweezer added 18 points and 13 points, and Andrea Edwards had 13 and five for OC.
The Condors are 5-11 overall and 1-5 in the WSC. They play at Pierce on Saturday with the tipoff at 5:00.
Condors Lose Lead and Game at Cuesta
January 25—San Luis Obispo
The OC men’s basketball team traveled to SLO for a conference showdown with the WSC number one Cougars. The Condors, playing without team leader Steph Thompson, fell 65-50.
Thompson had to sit the game, which clearly hurt Oxnard at both ends of the court. The Condors led at half, however, by a score of 36-32. The second half saw OC go cold from the floor, combined with some untimely fouls, cost them the game.
Gary Johnson led with 12 points and Robert Sweet came off the bench with 12 of his own.
OC looks to rebound against Pierce on Saturday night. The loss put them at 10-11 on the season and 3-3 in the WSC.
Condors Rise Up to Beat Moorpark
January 21—Oxnard
The Oxnard men’s basketball team had not been playing team basketball for quite some time. On Saturday night against rival Moorpark College, that all changed.
After the Condor’s leading rebounder and second leading scorer, Stephan Thompson, was ejected after eight minutes of play, the condors rallied.
They trailed by eight points at halftime, but held the Raiders to only 26 points in the second half. Bobby Johnson (pic) picked up the slack, scoring 12 points off the bench. Jamahl Slater added 12 points and Gary Johnson continued his solid all-around play with 23 points to lead OC.
Volunteer assistant coach, Jim Gilmer told Andre Smith to be ready to play as the roster dwindled due to fouls, and the freshman center from Victorville responded. He added 5 points, hitting a critical turn-around jumper to seal the Oxnard victory.
The win moved OC to 10-8 on the season and 3-2 overall. They play Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo on Wednesday.
Oxnard Ladies Play MC Tough
The score of the first game was 61-35, but only 21-27 in the first half.
Oxnard trailed by only five points early in the second half, but the Raiders went on a 26-5 run to end the contest. Ashanti Sweezer had 11 points for the Condors, with Dre Vega adding seven, and Andrea Edwards with six.
The loss dropped OC to 6-10 overall and 1-4 in conference. The next game is at Cuesta College on January 25th at 5:00.
Oxnard Women Come Back from 27
January 18—Santa Maria
The Lady Condors trailed the Hancock Bulldogs by 27 points in the second half. They game back and beat Hancock by 30 in the second half to post their first WSC North win, 67-64.
Dre Vega (pic) had a monster game, scoring 21 points, and holding Hancock’s leading scorer to two points in the second half. Ashanti Sweezer had a terrific performance scoring 21 points and grabbing 16 boards.
“This was an incredible game!” said Oxnard coach Phil Sherman.
The win puts OC at 1-3 and 6-9 overall. They face Moorpark in the Condor’s Nest on Saturday. Tipoff is slated for 5:00.
____
The men’s team fell to Hancock 56-47.
After learning their record was adjusted (1-2 to 2-1), to reflect a forfeiture by LA Pierce, they were unable to respond.
Moises Barrera (pic) led the way for the Condors with 14 points. Stephan Thompson had 11 points and eight rebounds, and Gary Johnson had 10 points and eight boards.
“We missed a lot of easy shots from the floor,” replied Stephan Thompson. “It was a tough game, but should get them at home if we make some shots.”
The loss dropped Oxnard to 2-2 in the WSC and 9-9 overall. They play against Moorpark College at home starting at 7:00 on Saturday.
Tough Week for Oxnard Basketball
Oxnard—January 14
After finding out the basketball programs were going to be suspended on Wednesday, the men’s and women’s teams had to prepare for cross-county rival Ventura College on Saturday.
The stands were packed and there was plenty of emotion when the women’s game tipped off at 5:00. Ventura’s methodical game and loaded roster was too much for the Condors. The final score was 60-32.
Ashanti Sweezer (pic) led OC with 10 points, followed by Ashlee Abney and Dre Vega with six each.
Both teams showed their support for Oxnard College Athletics by coming to mid-court for a picture after the game.
Oxnard’s record dropped to 5-9 and 0-3 in WSC play. They will travel to Hancock on Wednesday to take on the Bulldogs at 5:00.
_______
The OC men’s game followed a similar pattern as Ventura came out firing on all cylinders. The Condors were unable to match VC’s intensity, and eventually lost 83-63.
Stephan Thompson and Gary Johnson again led the way for OC by scoring 15 points each. Jamahl Slater pitched in 11 points and Devon Marshall added eight.
The loss of point guard Donnie McGowan certainly hindered the game plan. McGowan brings even more athleticism to the table. He forced teams to shift their defense and created space for other players. McGowan left the team suddenly after the announcement that the program was being suspended.
The Condors are now 8-9 on the season and 1-2 in the WSC. Their game tips off at Hancock on Wednesday at 7:00

Condors Win One, Lose One at SBCC
January 7—Santa Barbara
The men’s basketball team traveled to play the Vaqueros on Saturday night and was on the winning end of a one point game. After dropping their first conference game to LA Pierce College by one last week, they got a much needed win, defeating SBCC 90-89, in overtime.
Steph Thompson (pic) led the way with 27 points and 12 rebounds. Gary Johnson also had a double-double with 17 and 10. Donnie McGowan added 15 and nine for the Condors who evened their conference record to 1-1 (7-8 overall).
“We are still not playing up to our potential”, said head coach Jason Cunningham.
In the tough WSC, a win is a win, and the Condors need all of them to achieve their goals.
**********
The Lady Condors fell to SBCC in the early game, 66-42. They were led by Adrianna Vega’s (pic) 14 points.
The loss dropped the Condors to 4-8 overall and 0-2 in the WSC. “We can do better than that,” commented head coach Phil Sherman after the game. “Our top players have to perform. There’s got to be some level of expectation to fulfill every night.” (VC Star)
The Condors get a bye on Wednesday and then welcome top-ranked Ventura College to the Condor’s Nest on January 14th. The ladies tipoff at 5:00, while the men are slated for 7:00.
Condors Fall to Pierce
January 4—Oxnard
The Oxnard College women and men’s basketball teams fell to the LA Pierce Brahmas on Wednesday evening.
The Lady Condors lost by a score of 64-50. Freshman Tina Tran(pic) led the Condors with 12 points along with 12 points from Ashley Abney. OC outscored Pierce in the second half, but were unable to overcome their sluggish start.
The loss drops OC to 4-8 and 0-1 in the WSC
The men’s team suffered a tough one-point loss to Pierce, 61-60.
The game was a tough back and forth battle until the end. Oxnard had a chance to win the game in the end, but was unable to hit the last second shot.
Steph Thompson (pic) controlled the boards for the Condors while scoring 12 points. Gary Johnson had 11 points, Donnie McGowan 10, and Bobby Johnson 9.
Oxnard fell to 0-1 in WSC play and 6-8 on the season.
The Condors fly into Santa Barbara on Saturday to take on the Vaqueros. Tipoff for the ladies is 5:00 and the men play at 7:00.
Lady Condors Start Strong but fall in San Diego
December 18—San Diego
The Oxnard Lady Condor basketball team traveled to San Diego to compete in the San Diego Knights Invitational Basketball Tourney.
They played host San Diego on Friday and pummeled the Knights 83-51. OC was led by Dre Vega’s 24 points. Ashanti Sweezer (pic) continued to dominate the paint with 18 points and 18 boards. Andrea Edwards went for 14 and 7, while Maritssa Contreras had 10 points and 6 assists.

Sweezer again went for huge numbers, scoring 18 points and 16 rebounds. Maritssa Contreras had 14 points and 5 rebounds.
The Condors came out flat in the third place game against Victor Valley. OC managed only 36 points. Victor Valley played physical defense all game and beat the Condors 43-36.
“Overall the trip went well. We played flat in the final game as the kids were disappointed about the semi-final loss (to LA Mission).” Said head coach Phil Sherman.
Oxnard is at home on January 4th at 5:00 against Pierce College. This will be the first WSC conference game for the Condors. OC’s record stands at 4-7.
Condors Win OT Thriller
December 15—Oxnard
The OC men’s basketball team needed something good to happen…and it did. With 1.7 seconds left on the clock, Donnie McGowan (pic) hit a 50 foot shot to send the game into overtime at 71-71.
This came after McGowan shot an air ball with 3.1 on the clock. AVC’s Reggie Murray then missed two free throws with less than 2 seconds remaining. Five timeouts later, McGowan took two dribbles, banked in a shot from half court, with the clock at 0.0.
The final was 78-71, with the Condors taking down Antelope Valley (ranked #3 in California and #2 in So. Cal). Gary Johnson led OC with 23 points and Moises Barrera, nearly perfect from the arc, scored 17. Steph Thompson and Jamahl Slater added eight points each for the Condors who leveled their pre-conference record to 6-6.
“That was a memorable shot for the kids in the stands,” remarked head coach Jason Cunningham. On Condor Appreciation Night, the crowd certainly enjoyed a memorable game at the Condor’s Nest.

Johnson scored 20 points along with Thompson’s 17, and that was enough to win 63-60.
Head Coach Jason Cunningham had this to say about the win: “We are still looking to put a full 40 minutes of effort together. The biggest factor was no matter the score, we played like a team to bounce back from a previous home loss to Trade Tech. To beat them on the road, on their floor, is a good win for OC...”
The pre-conference win puts the Condors at (4-4) on the season, heading into the Santa Barbara Tourney on Thursday.
Condors Outstanding Season Comes to an End
November 29—Walnut
The 2011 OC Men’s Soccer team made history. They reached the “Final Eight” in the state and had the Mt. SAC Mounties on their heels. The Condors continued to find gaps in Mt. SAC’s defense and created several terrific scoring chances in the first half.
After going down early 1-0 in the first half, the Condors controlled the ball until the 36th minute when a Mt. SAC maintenance worker backed over a gas main that required the field to be evacuated. This resulted in a three hour delay for repairs.
The home team made adjustments, and when the game finally re-started, they packed in their defense, and finished the game 2-0.
“It’s a shame that we didn’t have a chance to play in the (Final Four). We had the number one team backed up and they changed their game plan during the long delay. If one of the early scoring chances had gone in, the game would have been totally different,” said Oxnard Head Coach Ross Greaney.
At the Regional Championship, a Mt. SAC administrator noted “… (The OC men) showed class and composure during a difficult situation.” They certainly exhibited characteristics of being well-rounded, mature and responsible citizens all season long.
Sophomore team captain, Dago Gonzalez summed it up with his comment about the 2011 team: "It's really special, what we have here. I'm realizing that we're never going to have it again."
Many of these great players, however, will certainly “Soar to New Heights” next year for university teams.

November 8—Oxnard
The seasons are turning for the Oxnard College men's soccer team and Ross Greaney wants to make sure his team is ready.
The head coach was able to point to Tuesday's 1-1 draw with defending state finalist College of the Canyons as an example of what will be lurking later this month in the postseason.
"We're moving into the postseason, where it's all about winning," said Greaney. "Today was an exact replica of what we'll see in the playoffs. We have to do a much better job."
After just six minutes, Victor Rodriguez's 45-yard goal gave third-place Canyons (7-4-10, 5-4-5) the upper hand, which enabled the Cougars to defend in numbers and counter attack.
"They got their miracle goal and they sat on it," Greaney. "Once they got that goal, they never came back out. Teams are going to play like this and we have to be prepared for it."
Tomas Araujo (pic) headed home the equalizer with seven minutes to play as Oxnard (12-1-7, 9-0-4) maintained its unbeaten record in the Western State Conference's North Division.
Although, with first-place Santa Barbara (14-1-4, 11-1-1) coming back from a halftime deficit to win at Los Angeles Mission, it doesn't look like it will be enough to retain the conference title.
"People don't realize how good this conference is," said Greaney, who labeled Oxnard's unbeaten WSC mark "a feat."
Oxnard played much of the second half without winger Sigifredo Torres, who suffered a hamstring injury, but created chance after chance in a frantic final 15 minutes as both teams attempted to grab three vital points.
"We possessed for 80 percent of the game," said Greaney, "just couldn't get that second goal. The boys battled."
Condors Hang Six Goals on Hancock
November 8—Oxnard
The OC Condor's women soccer team defeated the Allan Hancock Bulldogs 6-0 on Tuesday evening.
It was Sophomore Night for the Condors and all of the sophomores started the game for OC. The vastly improved Hancock Bulldog team beat Oxnard earlier in the season 3-2 in Santa Maria. The Condor’s certainly avenged the loss.
The first thirty minutes of the game was relatively even with each team trading a few chances to score. The Condor defense was relentless and suffocating. In the 30th Minute Megan Williams calmly finished a shot with an assist from Marlene Valdez(pic). Ces Montano won a battle and headed a ball to Marlene Valdez, who once again assisted on a goal. Annie Saldana whipped in a shot and the Condors took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
The first 28 Minutes of the second half were once again tight but the excellent team defending paid off and the floodgates opened. Marlene Valdez curled a free kick in from 20 yards out, and added another goal when she ripped the ball of a Hancock defender and finished a break away in the 82nd minute. Brit Dubin crushed a left footed volley (Williams and Valdez combined for the assist) in the 83rd.
