Women’s Cross Country Runs Strong to the Finish

November 20--State Championship @ Fresno 5k

There are 106 community colleges in the state; only 28 qualify for the XC state championship. The Oxnard College women’s team finished their season by placing 22nd at Fresno.

Zulie Jimenez (pic)who had an outstanding season ran another great race by finishing 17th place in 18:52, earning all-state third-team honors. Jessica Serrano was the second Condor woman running a solid race clocking a 20:13. Christi Sepulveda was the next OC finisher and she ran 21:59. She was followed by Mari Samano 23:12, Becka Lopez 23:27, Dee Lopez 23:56, and Susy Mateos 25:33.

The Condors had another successful season under Coach Geno Sharp. “We had a successful season and have many terrific freshmen to build our program for next year,” commented coach Sharp.

Lady Condor Runners Fly into State Championships

November 7--So Cal Regional’s @ Mission Bay 5k

After surviving conference finals and advancing to the Southern California Championship the Oxnard Lady Cross Country team had their work cut out for themselves.

“They all worked together and performed to the best of their abilities. They were rewarded by qualifying for the State Championship,” commented head coach Geno Sharp. They placed 17thas a team.

Zulie Jimenez (pic) ran a sterling race and captured 11thoverall, in 19:39, in a field of 194 women. Following her, as she has done all season, Jessica Serrano also ran great scoring 58thin 21:00. The next trio of ladies were Christi Sepulveda, 114thin 22:30, Becka Lopez 153rd24:18 and Mari Samano 154th24:19.

On the men’s side, Pepe Hernandez got to the Southern California finals and ran a solid race to place 147thin 23:39 out of 207men.

The Lady Condors will travel to Fresno for the State Championship event on November 20th.

Lady Condor Runners Advance to So Cal Championships  

October 26—Glendale  

Conference finals were held at Glendale and the OC women’s team was running with hopes of moving forward to the So Cal Championships. They did just that by earning the last spot in San Diego on Saturday.  

Zuley Jimenez led the OC women with a 10thplace finish in 19:59, earning all conference honors. Joining her for all WSC was Jessica Serrano placing 18thin 20:57. Cristy Sepulveda finished 37thin 22:32 followed by Mari Samano placing 54thin 23:52. The flying Lopes sisters Becky and Dee closed the scoring in 64thand 65thplace, respectively.  

The OC women were missing Maria Jijada and Alex Valencia, but still managed to advance Oxnard College to the So Cal Championships for the 12thtime in Coach Geno Sharp’s tenure.

For the OC men their season finished in 12th place, however, Pepe Hernandez qualified for So Cal Championships by placing 34th(123 runners) in the WSC Championships.

Tough Conditions Don’t Slow Oxnard Cross Country

The cold, rainy, and slow course was not enough to slow Zuley Jimenez (left)as she ran well again. She placesd 7th overall in 21:04. Following Zuley was Jessica Serrano in 27th clocking 21:55. Cristy Sepulveda was next in 70th in 24:17 and Alex Valencia placed 83rd in 25:23. Mari Samano rounded out the Condor scoring 93rd in 25:51.

2010 Foothill Invite

The Foothill invite was held in Ontario this year, This was the first time OC Cross Country had been at this site. “This new course did not phase the OC women,” remarked head coach Geno Sharp. Competing against 18 other colleges, Zulie Jimenez led the ladies by placing 5th in a personal best of 18:13. She was followed by Jessica Serrano (left) who finished 33rd in 19:46. Cristy Sepulveda packed it up with her teammates Alex Valencia and Maria Jijada placing 63rd, 66th and 72nd.

Runners and Course Shine at WSC Cross Country Preview

September 24—Oxnard

The course was excellent, as were the runners, at the first cross country event held at Oxnard College in 24 years. Everybody was happy to be out of the heat with the times reflecting the beautiful conditions. Glendale swept the women’s and men’s races, with team scores of 21 and 37, respectively.

The Lady Condors ran well, finishing in 5th place. They had a team score of 152, with Moorpark, Cuesta, and College of the Canyons finishing ahead of them. Oxnard was led by Zulie Jimenez (above)in 4th overall, with a great time of 18:49. Jessica Serrano was not far behind in 11th place. She ran the 5K course in 19:46. The Condor scoring was rounded out by Cristy Sepulveda (48th), Marysela Samano (56th), and Alex Valencia (61st).

The Oxnard Men finished in 12th place. They were led by Pepe Hernandez (left)with a fine showing in 47th place, with a time of 22:39. The other Condors were Angel Ascencio (76th), Jamie Vasquez (94th), Jose Montoya (96th), and Isreal Lespro (107th).

Kicking off the 2010 cross country season freshman Zulia Jimenez was ready to go. “Her first collegiate XC meet…was sterling” reported Geno Sharp, Head Cross Country Coach. She finished 4th overall in 21:23 with 14 colleges in attendance. The second Lady Condor was sophomore Jessica Serrano who placed 21st in 23:33. The next three ladies finishing for OC were Maria Jijada 48th, Christi Sepulveda 50th and Alex Valencia 51st. The field included 86 runners total

Starting out as an incomplete team OC’s men were led by Freshman Pepe Hernandez, who placed 48th in a field of 131 men, with a time of 25:04. Rounding out the Condor finishers were Angel Ascencio 94th 28:01, Jamie Vasquez 95th 28:21 and Tony Guzman 131st 59:31.

OC Condor Earns Scholarship at UCSD

August 26

Isidore Herrera ran cross country and graduated from Oxnard College in May. He has now earned a starting spot on the UCSB Gaucho squad by finishing 3rd in their time trials.

Isidore was a state finalist four times (two for cross country and two for track at Moorpark College), and earned three first team Western State Conference awards.

Geno Sharp commented, “Isidore is extremely dedicated and easy to coach…(he) will no doubt continue to succeed at the NCAA Division 1 level, because of the great program he is joining, coupled with his terrific work ethic.”

Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Earn Birth to State Championship

November 6--Mt. SAC

The focus of the Oxnard Cross Country teams at the So. Cal Championships was qualifying for the State Championships. That’s exactly what they did.  Cynthia Navarro led the women again finishing 14th in 18:52 and earning a championship medal. Following her was Liz Robles in 47th in 19:59, just behind her was Jessica Serrano in 54th in 20:08. Rounding out the scoring team placed Mari Samano in 148th timed at 22:43 and Maria Jajada in 155th in a PR 22:55.

The Men’s team had similar goals as the women and they also stood up and got it done! Izzy Herrera led OC placing 24th in 21:31 following Izzy was Caser Lopez in 40th clocking 21:57. Martin Cervantes finished next and continues to improve placing 57th in 22:15. Chris Coleman and Nelson Rivera were the final two scoring members getting 106th and 154th respectfully.

Oxnard Cross Country Continues to Impress at WSC Finals

The WSC Championship completes conference competition and establishes post season births. Running up against the #1 ranked team in the state, Glendale, we had our work cut out for us. OC ladies were up for the challenge. The conditions were cool and windy at the Fairfield cross-country course. Cynthia Navarro (left)led again placing 13th 20:26. Right behind was Liz Robles just 4 seconds back in 16th place. Jessica Serrano ran her best race so far placing 20th in 20:48. Erica Tomaschow was next in 54th in 23:07 and Mari Samano was 56th in 23:31 to help their team finish fifth.

In the men’s race OC was determined to advance to SoCal finals. Running with a purpose Oxnard’s Izzy Herrera (right)  was battling for the led for most of the race and finished in 3rd timing 21:45. Cesar Lopez ran a great race as well to finish just two places behind in 5th in 22:08. Martin Cervantes continues to impress and improve placing 17th and earning all conference honors for the first time in 22:41. Chris Coleman hung tough and placed 27th in 23:11. Rounding out the scoring team was Nelson Rivera 52nd in 24:17.

Oxnard Cross Country Top Ten at Mt SAC

With 38 teams collected together for this competition it was nothing less than fierce. Up  for the task were the OC Ladies. Led by Cynthia Navarro again she finished 14th in a field of 339 women in 19:16. Next for the condors was Jessica Serrano(pictured) 46th in 20:30 followed Liz Robles 57th in 20:52 hampered by soreness. Erica Tomaschow was next placing 125th in 22:24 and Mari Samano was 161st  in 23:28.

Oxnard men earned a top ten ranking by their performance at the Mt SAC invite.  Isidore Herrera led the OC team again finishing in 18th place with a time of 22:25.  Just five seconds back, with a time of 22:30, he was Cesar Lopez in 22nd place.  Martin Cervantes (pictured)continues to impress and improve. He finished 32nd and clocked 22:44.   Chris Coleman ran a gutsy race placing 49th with a 23:07. A  new 5th  man this week, Brian Alvarado, finished 159th in a field of 340 men.  The OC Men finished 10th in the invitational amongst 37 other colleges.

The Western States Conference is always tough in cross country. No exception this year, our ladies squad ran in a very close competition. Glendale dominated the meet by placing 3 women in the top 4. Cynthia Navarro (left) led OC with another top performance placing 5th in 19:43. Liz Robles followed her in 14th clocking a 20:44, Jessica Serrano ran another solid performance placing 30th. Mari Samano improved and moved into the fourth women position placing 55th and Maria Jalada broke into the top five by placing 58th to round out the scoring team.

Our Men put together a solid performance finishing 3rd behind Glendale. Izzy Herrera ran outstanding placing 3rd in 21:47. Much improved Martin Cervantes followed Izzy and was our second man placing 16th in 22:33. Cesar Lopez was right behind him in 17th timing 22:41. Our fourth man was Chris Coleman who finished 19th in 22:44 keeping a tight pack. Nelson Rivera rounded out the top five placing 49th in 24:14.

Entering into the Foothill invite in the past has usually been a low key competition. Not this year, however, with 15 teams entered and 3 of the top 5 teams in the state. Up for the task was Cynthia Navarro, who finished in 4th place clocking a sparkling 17:38. Tucked right behind her was Liz Robles who place 11th in 18:20, followed by Jessica Serrano in 31st dipping under 20 minutes for the first time, racing to a 19:44. Then Erica Tomaschow and Mari Samno closed out the scoring team, placing 58th and 59th recording PR’s in 21:34 & 21:39 respectively.

Our Men’s squad continues to improve placing 6th place this week and moving in to the top 10 ranking for the first time this year. Izzy(pic) Herrera led the Condors again placing 11th in 20:14, followed Caser(pic) Lopes 25th in 20:46. Martin Cervantes continues to amaze and improve placing 30th in 21:03. Chris Coleman rejoins OC and ran 21:51 to place 49th. Nelson Rivera looks to have hit his stride, finishing in 60th in 22:23 round out the top five men.

 Our Lady Condors flew high again competing at the Orange Coast Classic. In a field of 25 community colleges, the Lady Condors finished 5th overall. Cynthia Navarro (left) led the team, finishing in 3rd place. She was followed by Liz Robles 13th and Jessica Sarrano in 32nd place.

 In the men’s race, Issy Herrera led the team this week, and took 21st place. Following him was Cesar Lopez at 28th place, and much-improved Martin Cervantes was 40th. Although OC was hampered this week because the #2 man Chris Coleman was unable to compete, they managed an 11th place showing overall.
