OXNARD COLLEGE FALL 2005 SCHOLARS' LECTURE SERIESThe Scholars’ Lecture Series is presented on Wednesdays from noon to 1 p.m. and is held in LS-8 (Clock Tower Auditorium at Oxnard College, 4000 South Rose Ave., Oxnard, CA). The OC Scholars’ Lecture Series is presented by faculty members of Oxnard College and guest speakers. All presentations are free and open to the public. Campus parking costs $1.
September 14: The Making of “September Tapes,” a New York Times Critic’s Pick
Nancy Gregg, mother of the late writer/producer Christian Van Gregg,
will share a behind the scenes look at her son’s post-9/11 docu-drama. The film was sold at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival and was showcased at several other film festivals.
September 21: “Mi Casa es su Casa”: Putting a Face on Farm Workers’ Struggles
Jessica Arciniega of the Ag Futures Alliance Farm Worker Housing Task Force will introduce a film showing people living two and three families to a home in order to pay the rent. This is a concern in Ventura County, where many working families cannot afford the high cost of living.
September 28: Deaf Culture: A Day in the Life
Join us today for a stimulating discussion about hot topics related to Deaf culture and American Sign Language.
October 5: Call Me Capable
Carol Leish--a motivational speaker, writer and trainer with over 10 years experience in teaching and working with Social Service agencies--will explore the importance of becoming more accepting of others. She will inspire you with her humor and genuineness.
October 12: Confessions of a Mad Artist Artist Gwenlyn Norton asks the question: Are you suffering from creative block? Her presentation will offer powerful encouragement and tools for people who undertake the adventure of finding, protecting, and nourishing their creative voice.
October 19: Poetry in a Materialistic Society
Larry Jaffe, the International Readings Coordinator for the United Nations Dialogue among Civilizations through Poetry program, will show how poetry can bring us back to our spiritual roots in a materialistic society.
October 26: Looking through the Mirror
Oxnard College professor, Jack Ahrens, will take a poetic look at mirrors, what they signify, reveal, and conceal. Come and enjoy a selection of poetry and observations about mirrors.
November 2: National Native American History Month
Pat Brock, a prominent member of the American Indian Movement in the early 1970's will take an in depth look at the importance of National American Indian culture.
November 9: Most Precious Flowers: A Tribute to Daughters of Hispanic Blood.
David Magallanes of Oxnard College will offer a Chicano father's view of the ancestral regard for indigenous Latin American women as the privileged "givers of life." He will discuss the responsibility of a father to raise a daughter who is happy and aware of her pivotal place in the universe.
November 16: Drop Beats Not Bombs!
Arts for Action and CAUSE, local grassroots organizations dedicated to
social change, will discuss how hip hop, mural painting, and film-making educate us about problems in our local and global communities. This workshop will analyze and critique ways to build peace and power through art.
November 30: ID Theft: When Bad Things Happen To Your Good Name
Police Officer Richard DeLaO of VC will define identify theft, explain how it occurs, and discuss what to do if your identity is stolen. This presentation will also provide ways to manage your personal information.
