OC MARINE EDUCATION CENTER
SEEKS DOCENTS
Volunteers are needed to serve as docents at the Oxnard College Marine Education Center at Channel Islands Harbor throughout the fall semester.
The OC Marine Education Center opened in January offering classes in marine biology, oceanography and aquaculture. The center features an exhibit of live sea creatures, a simulation of coastal waves and other projects highlighting the coastal environment.
The docents are needed to keep the Marine Education Center open on weekdays and during an occasional Saturday for visitors to the Channel Islands Harbor and the Fisherman’s Wharf area where the center is located at the corner of Victoria Avenue and Channel Islands Boulevard in Oxnard.
The docents would conduct tours of the classrooms where marine-themed murals decorate the walls, the sea life tanks and other marine biology displays.
During the recent “Tall Ships” festival at Channel Islands Harbor, volunteers staffed the center as an estimated 30,000 visitors toured the ships and explored harbor attractions.
