"Black History Month" events continue through Feb. 28 at Oxnard College with the conclusion of a video festival and two lectures by visiting faculty from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
The Black Educators Association (BEA) of Oxnard College is sponsoring a video presentation on Wednesday, Feb. 21, profiling "Malcolm X," the radical activist who strived to achieve civil rights for African-Americans in the 1960s. The video will be shown in LA-6 (The Forum) from noon to 1 p.m., and be repeated in the evening from 7 to 8 p.m.
On Monday, Feb. 26, Dr. Shirley Kennedy, a professor in the department of Black Studies at UC Santa Barbara, will lecture on "The Henrietta Marie," the historical slave ship that has been recreated in a miniature ship model for display in the Letters & Science Lecture Hall (LS-8) from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. Dr. Kennedy, who received her PhD from Claremont College, will show a short video of the Henrietta Marie, and will also speak on the topics of "Middle Passage Curriculum" and the "Digital Divide."
The observance will conclude on Feb. 28 with a lecture on "Slavery in Africa" by Dr. Earl Stewart, professor of Black Studies at UC Santa Barbara. Dr. Stewart, who received his masters and D.M.A. in music composition at the University of Texas at Austin, is also a noted composer who is the author of "African American Music: An Introduction." Dr. Stewart will lecture twice, at 12 p.m. and again in the evening at 7 p.m. in LA-6 (The Forum) at Oxnard College.
