OC CELEBRATES 26TH ANNUAL COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES MAY 16 IN OC GYMNASIUM
Oxnard College graduates will enjoy 10 seconds in the spotlight as they address an audience of family, friends and fellow students as part of the unique Oxnard College tradition observed during commencement exercises to be held Wednesday, May 16, 2001, in the OC Gymnasium. The ceremony will begin at 4 p.m.
While most other commencement ceremonies include guest speakers or a returning alumni, Oxnard College has the distinction of showcasing its students and allowing them to take the microphone as they accept their diplomas on the stage. Many of them thank family members, teachers and others who helped and supported their efforts to earn college degrees.
OC mathematics instructor Alan Hayashi will address the graduates. He was recently voted as the recipient of the Mark Dever Award for Excellence in Teaching by a Full-Time Instructor.
Welcoming the graduates will be Oxnard College Interim President Michael Gregoryk., Ventura County Community College District Chancellor Dr. Philip Westin, along with VCCCD Trustees Mr. Art Hernandez, Dr. Allan Jacobs and Dr. Norman Nagel. Other dignitaries expected to be in attendance include VCCCD Vice Chancellor Dr. Marion Boenheim, Associate Vice Chancellor Dr. Dennis Cabral, Chief Counsel Jack Lipton, Oxnard College Executive Vice President for Student Learning Dr. Anthony Tricoli, OC Classified Senate President Lucy Paez and Chris Fielder, Associated Student Governing Senate President for 2000-2001. Academic Senate President Mary Jones and Mr. Gregoryk will both confer degrees.
Faculty member David Magallanes will announce the names of about 300 candidates participating in the ceremony as they receive their diplomas from college and district officials. A total of 575 students who are candidates for graduation after the successful completion of courses in the fall, spring and summer semesters are eligible to participate in the ceremony.
The program will also include the Pledge of Allegiance lead by Albert Mendez, President for Associated Students of Oxnard College for 2001-2002, and the national anthem sung by Samantha Padilla, a student from Channel Islands High School. Additional music will be provided by Linda Fern Fay. Sign language interpreters Linda Lehman and Terri Chapman will also translate the proceedings.
Degrees will be conferred for General Liberal Arts and Sciences programs.
Following the ceremony there will be a reception with punch and cookies served outside the doors of the gymnasium foyer, made possible by the Liwayway Torres and the Oxnard College Cafeteria. |
