GOLD COAST SCIENCE NETWORK CONFERENCE FOR TEACHERS TO BE HELD MAY 3, 2003, AT OXNARD COLLEGE
“Soaring with Science in 2003” will be the theme of the Gold Coast Science Network’s Spring Conference featuring more than 30 science-themed workshops on Saturday, May 3, 2003, at Oxnard College. Hundreds of science educators are expected to attend the event, which features a keynote speech by NASA astronaut U.S. Air Force Col. Scott “Doc” Horowitz, a native of Newbury Park.
The conference opens at 8 a.m. with registration and refreshments, with Session One of workshops beginning at 9:40 a.m.; Session Two at 10:50 a.m., to be followed by lunch with Session Three at 1 p.m. and Session Four at 2:10 p.m.
The conference, which is co-sponsored by the California Science Teachers Association, will provide educators with a variety of interactive displays, breakout sessions, and introduce them to science education professionals sharing innovative and interactive methods to teach science at every educational level. Workshop titles include “ROBOLAB 2.5.2: The Latest Mindstorm for Schools,” “Kelp Forest Science and Art,” “Unlock the Secrets of Science,” “Channel Islands Plate Tectonics Jigsaw,” and “Bioluminescence – The Chemistry of Light.”
Over 50 presenters from science-based companies like Pasco Scientific and Pitsco LEGO Dacta, science institutions like the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and educational contributors from UCSB, Cal State Northridge, Cal State Los Angeles, Pacifica, Channel Islands, Buena and Santa Barbara high schools will participate in the conference.
Horowitz, a Thousand Oaks resident, will speak about his career experiences after graduating from Newbury Park High School, earning degrees in engineering from California State University, Northridge and the Georgia Institute of Technology and joining the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base. Selected as a pilot by NASA in 1992, Horowitz flew his first mission as an astronaut in 1996 on the space shuttle Columbia. He is a veteran of four shuttle missions, having also piloted the shuttles Atlantis and Discovery. |
