OC STUDENTS RECEIVE HACU INTERNSHIPS
The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities and Oxnard College is pleased to announce that OC students Erika Zavala, Adriana Almontes and Yessica Diaz have been awarded summer internships as part of HACU’s Scholarship Programs for the 2002-2003 academic year and will depart for their assignments this week.
Erika Zavala, a graduate of Rio Mesa, will work at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency in Kansas City, Missouri. Adriana Almontes, a Channel Islands H.S. grad, will work in the Veterans Administration National Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention in Durham, North Carolina. And Yessica Diaz will work for the Veterans Administration Western New York Healthcare System in Buffalo, New York.
Since 1992, the HACU National Internship Program (HNIP) has placed more than 2700 college students in challenging summer- and semester-long internship assignments with federal agencies and corporations nationwide. By providing a comprehensive range of services to students, supervisors, federal agencies and corporations the HNIP has established itself as a model program for student development and outreach to Hispanic communities across the country. The program "attracts some of the best and brightest students from across the country," according to HACU officials.
Students receive round-trip transportation to their internship site, and safe and affordable housing near public transportation as part of their paid internship. HACU interns also participate in an orientation program in Washington, D.C. the weekend before they report to their assignments. HACU monitors the progress and performance of the HNIP interns and maintains regular contact with them, also tracking attendance. As with a real job, the interns will have to undergo mid-term and final performance appraisals as part of an end-of-program evaluation. |
