Oxnard College to Co-host “Green Jobs and the Green Economy” Action Summit on June 17, 2009
OXNARD, Calif. – Oxnard College President Richard Durán, Oxnard Mayor Tom Holden and Marcos Vargas, Executive Director of the Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy (CAUSE), will welcome public organizations and private sector industries as they participate in the “Green Jobs and the Green Economy Action Summit 2009” set for Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at Oxnard College and sponsored by the United Food and Commercial Workers Union-Local 1036. The summit will be convened by CAUSE, the cities of Oxnard and Ventura, the Economic Development Collaborative of Ventura County, the Martin V. Smith School of Business and Economics at California State University, Channel Islands, the Oxnard College office of Career & Technical Education, the Oxnard College Office of Economic Development and Innovation, the Tri-Counties Building and Construction Trades Council, AFL-CIO, the Tri-Counties Labor Council, the Ventura County Civic Alliance and the Workforce Investment Board of Ventura County.
There will be two sessions with workshops on “Green Jobs are Pathways out of Poverty,” “Sustaining the Environment & Communities,” and “Green Investments” and the keynote speaker is Tim Rainey, Director of the Workforce and Economic Development Program for the California Labor Federation. Rainey will speak on “Green Jobs: Good for the Environment, Labor, Business and Government.” It is hoped that the summit will help community leaders develop a consensus about what public, private, labor and education projects and policies are needed to develop quality green jobs in Ventura County.
Registration is $20 per person to attend the summit, which is scheduled to take place from 7:30 a.m. to noon with free parking provided in Lot H (off Rose Avenue and North Campus Road).
