Oxnard College has been notified that it has been awarded a grant totaling $1,018,789 from the U.S. Department of Education to fund the Talent Search Program at the college during a five-year period beginning September 1, 2002.
The Talent Search program, entitled A Community Bridge to Higher Education “Where No Child Gets Left Behind,” will over a five-year period, enroll 750 eligible participants each year from ten target-area schools – six middle schools and four high schools – and help prepare them to enroll at Oxnard College. The program will provide them with academic advisement, career counseling, access to and practice with technology tools, tutoring and other academic support services. In addition, the students will be given assistance with financial aid and college admissions, will visit college and university campuses and take part in various cultural events.
The target middle and junior high schools include Robert Frank Intermediate, Blackstock Junior High, E.O. Green Junior High, Haydock Junior High, Ocean View Junior High and Rio Del Valle Junior High. The high schools involved in the project are Channel Islands High School, Oxnard High School, Hueneme High School and Rio Mesa High School.
“(There is the) urgent need in the target area for early intervention programs that encourage youth, particularly Latino youth, to complete their secondary educations and enter post-secondary, that we have developed our Talent Search proposal,” according to the project proposal.
Beginning with an initial grant of $190,000 beginning September 1, orientation sessions will be conducted in English and Spanish to all 10 target schools. Talent Search advisors will begin recruiting students, conducting workshops and disseminating information about the program to students and their parents. The project director will also make presentations on the Talent Search services and eligibility criteria to community organizations and agencies.
