| Oxnard College will host a Summer Reading Skills Program from Monday, June 19 until July 17, 2006 for area students who want to improve their reading skills and are enrolled in grades kindergarten through 11th grade.
The program is offered by the University of California, Santa Barbara Extension and meets the Continuing Education Units (CEUs) standards for California instructional programs in the areas of Phonics, Vocabulary, Study Skills, Reading Speed and Comprehension. The programs are taught by faculty from the Institute of Reading Development using methods to improve student success in phonics, sight vocabulary, reading aloud and comprehension skills. Fluent independent reading is the goal for third-graders, for example, while in fourth– and fifth- grades students should gain more than one whole grade level in reading comprehension as they learn to read complex words and sentences more fluently. The program for ninth through 11th grade students helps double reading speed in textbooks and triples speed in easier reading materials while significantly improving reading comprehension. Tuition for the programs is $299 per student. Parents can call 1-800-978-3532 for more information and to register.
