CHERYL SHEARER IS NEW BUSINESS/TECHNOLOGY DEAN
VCCCD Chancellor Philip Westin has announced the appointment of Cheryl Shearer as Dean, Business and Technology at Oxnard College on a permanent basis. Ms. Shearer's position as Dean of Economic Development for the District was eliminated, paving the way for her to return to Oxnard College.
"Although the genesis of this move was fiscal concern, it is a wonderful example of a win-win for the college and the District," said Dr. Westin. "Before I made this decision I talked personally to Cheryl who is very excited by this assignment, and Mr. Gregoryk, wearing his 'President hat,' has spoken to faculty and management at the college, all of whom are very pleased."
Eliminating the district economic development position is just one way the VCCCD has been forced to react in the wake of major budget cuts suffered by the California Community Colleges when the Governor signed the state budget into law in early August. For example, although the community college system represents only 5 percent of the entire state budget, the system suffered 23% of all budget vetoes by the Governor, according to Dr. Westin.
"We are still assessing what the effect of this major budget hit will be to the District," the Chancellor continued. "However, one thing is very clear, we can presume that this is not 'business as usual' in the Community Colleges of Ventura County. On the other hand, we do not want to overreact negatively, but rather, it is important to make prudent, conservative fiscal decisions when opportunities present themselves." |
