The free conference includes a keynote presentation on “Accessing School Services and Community Resources” such as Special Education, Legal Services, Public Health, Childcare subsidies, support groups and financial aid, according to Bea Sandy, program director for the Foster and Kinship Care Education program.
A lunch will be served and free childcare is available for participants who pre-register for this event. Caregiver experts estimate that grandparents and other non-parent relatives care for more than 1 million children in California. Oxnard, Ventura and Moorpark colleges are partners in the “Teams Linking for Children” program that assists “kinship” caregivers— those grandparents or other relatives who are caring for children rather than parents.
Kids in foster care will also be able to enjoy a “Back to School Makeover Day” on Wed., Aug. 22, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. At the Oxnard and Moorpark campuses and at Kids & Families Together in Ventura. At Oxnard College there will also be a beauty consultant who specializes in black skin tones and hair from 10 a.m. to noon. Door prizes will be announced hourly which will include free haircuts. Children over 8 years of age are encouraged to attend. Limited childcare with pre-registration is available ONLY at Oxnard College.
