OXNARD COLLEGE LITERATURE ARTS & LECTURE SERIES PRESENTERS ANNOUNCED FOR FALL 2009
Noted L.A. Times columnist Steve Lopez, celebrity CJ Jones and poet Deena Metzer are among the guest lecturers featured at the 2009 Fall Oxnard College Literature, Arts & Lecture Series that begins Wednesday, September 23, 2009.
The Literature, Arts & Lecture Series is held on Wednesdays from 12:45 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. in LS 8 (Clock Tower Auditorium) and is funded by Oxnard College. Some events are co-funded by Poets & Writers, Inc., through a James Irvine grant. The events are free, and students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to attend. Visitors can park free in the A and B parking lots located near Bard Road. “CJ Jones Live!” — In Celebration of Deaf Awareness Month, internationally known deaf director, writer and actor CJ Jones will show his short DVD, “See What I’m Saying,” and perform comedy and storytelling involving audience participation.

“The Painter of the White Dove” — Painter Ako Eyong will display some of his storytelling paintings that portray his home in the Congo Basin and discuss how he uses his art to create awareness about the need for peace in politically corrupt areas of Africa.

“Student Digi Film Festival: And the Winner Is…” — Oxnard Film Festival Director Kitty Merrill will be joined by filmmakers and festival organizers to talk about the independent voice that film festivals offer on the big screen and to preview student films to be screened Oct. 16 & Oct. 17, 2009.

“The Soloist: An Unlikely Friendship on Skid Row” — For the “One Book, One Campus” reading project this year, L.A. Times columnist Steve Lopez will talk about his relationship with the homeless prodigy musician, Nathaniel Ayers, who became the subject of Lopez’ best selling book, The Soloist. October 28, 2009
“Personal Empowerment through Belly Dance” — American belly dancer Shareen El Safy will talk about her travels to Egypt to study raqs sharki dance and perform in Cairo’s nightclubs. As part of her lecture she will demonstrate Egyptian dance movements that are self-actualizing for women.

Collected Poems: Theme and Obsession* — Poet, novelist, teacher and healer Deena Metzger will read a selection of poems that have insisted themselves, revealing recurrent themes that demonstrate how poetry reflects on a life and spurs healing and soul making.

Dirty Little Secrets: Breaking Open the Silent Chains — English Professor Dr. Deborah De Vries, Armando Vazquez and guests will share poetry by young women who have survived incest or sexual abuse and are writing about it in a healing group, Life in Ink, at Café on A in Oxnard.

Graves, Cannibals & Headhunters: Ethics of Studying Humans — Anthropologist, environmental historian and author Linda Kama’ila will explore methods for studying past lives using data from environmental and natural sciences, as opposed to historical accounts, and will address ethical concerns.

AIDS Awareness through Information Sharing & Testing — In observance of World AIDS Day, William Bradley of Project X will discuss the importance of HIV/AIDS awareness and his guest speaker will share a personal story about how he contracted AIDS and how he lives with it.

Evolution of American Essence — Oxnard College Professor Anthony Rodriguez and students from the Literature Institute of Oxnard College will examine the Declaration of Independence and Letter from Birmingham Jail in terms of what it means to be an American, a patriot and a curator of freedom.
