The McNish Art Gallery at Oxnard College is pleased to present Squeeze, a group exhibition curated by Los Angeles Artist, Sandra Low. The artworks included in this group exhibition display a sense of compression and extrusion. Forms erupt and multiply into networks of potential or spent energy, distorting the seemingly familiar into a wholly personal artistic vision.
Launa Bacon often explores the dual themes of attraction and repulsion in her artwork. Her haunting painting of a two-headed figure questions assumptions about an unified self and conveys the all too common tension between our desire for intimacy and our desire to push it away. The cosmic fiberglass sculpture, by Jose Sarinana, Another Happy Ending, reminds the viewer of a school science project that has taken on an entirely unexpected dimension. Sarinana tends to playfully work his materials, infusing a whimsical, homemade feel to his art that is slyly funny, sexy, and menacing. The same can be said about drawings and prints of volcanoes by Mark Licari. His warbling linework traces a frenetic cosmos ejecting bodily fluids and beetles into a never-ending cycle of destruction and creation. Misato Suzuki occupies a quieter space where line and form are gently nudged into place on the spare field of her paintings. Clusters of sewing needles and kernel-like shapes are imbued with an awkward grace, demonstrating how the simplest gesture in human "markmaking" can be thoroughly compelling.
The McNish Art Gallery is located at 4000 South Rose Avenue, Oxnard, CA 93033 and welcomes public viewing two times a week or by appointment. Gallery hours are Mon. and Wed. from 11:00 am - 2pm, and 4:00pm-5:00pm. A reception for the artists will be held on Wed., February 23rd, from 4:00-6:00 pm with an artist lecture at 4:30pm. Refreshments will be served. The show is free and open to the public. Parking is $1. |
