OXNARD COLLEGE DEANS INVITED TO SPEAK TO JUNE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES
If it's June, it must be graduation time at the local public and private high schools.
Oxnard College has been fortunate to have two of its fine academic deans invited to speak to some of those Oxnard-area high school commencement exercises and recognition ceremonies.
On June 1, Dr. Steven Hall, Dean of Mathematics/Science and Health was invited to address the graduates of Santa Clara High School in Oxnard and speak on the topic of "What Am I Going to Do With My Life?"
Dr. Hall said he urged the students to "identify and define a mission in their life."
"It was a great opportunity to speak to so many students directly and tell them that they must find a life's work -- a mission -- that will give them a reason to go out every day and make a difference in this world."
"It was quite an honor to be able to deliver a commencement address," he added. "We look forward to continuing our partnership with Santa Clara High School."
This past weekend, on June 16, Oxnard College Dean of Liberal Education Ramiro Sanchez was also invited to help "Salute the Graduates" at a lavish celebration sponsored by the Filipino Community of Ventura County, Inc. at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center. It is the 24th year that the Filipino community has honored outstanding scholars and athletes and to date, more than 1,400 students have been honored.
This year one of the honorees, Agustin "Augie" Castaneda III, a Channel Islands High School graduate, was the third runner-up for the FCVCI 2002 Scholars award. Young Agustin, with a top cumulative GPA of 4.5, won a Governor's Scholarship Program award, was one of the top 10 in his CIHS graduating class, and was one of the winners of a scholarship award at the 20th Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame ceremony Saturday at the Clarion Ventura Beach Hotel.
Agustin is the son of Agustin and Alma Castaneda of Oxnard. Augie manages the OC Publications/Campus Resource Center. |
