California State Poet Laureate Al Young has rescheduled his appearance as part of the Oxnard College Speakers Series to Wednesday, April 30, 2008. He will read his original poetry in a program called “What’s Happening on Earth” at 12:45 p.m. in the OC Clock Tower Auditorium, LS-8.
Young will speak from experience about creativity and human survival, themes he taps into in his latest book of poetry, Something About the Blues. On May 15, 2005, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Al Young as California Poet Laureate. Al Young’s additional honors include the Wallace Stegner Award, the Guggenheim, Fulbright National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships; the PEN-Library of Congress Award for Short Fiction: the PEN-USA Aard for Non-Fiction; two American Book Awards; two Pushcart Prizes; two New York Times Notable Book of the Year Citations; a Silicon Valley Arts Council Fellowship; the Stephen Henderson Achievement Award for Poetry; Radio Pacifica’s KPFA Peace Prize; the Glenna Luschei Distinguished Poetry Fellowship; and the Richard Wright Award for Excellence in Literature. His many books include novels, collections of poetry, essays, memoirs and anthologies.
His newest collection of poetry, Something About the Blues, is now available from Sourcebooks. This event is co-sponsored by the Oxnard College Foundation, Poets & Writers, Inc., through a grant from The James Irvine Foundation and the California Center for the Book.
