NATIONALLY ACCLAIMED POET AND STUDENT POETRY READING HIGHLIGHT CULTURAL EVENTS AT OC IN MARCHNationally-acclaimed Poet John Oliver Simon will be featured during a special Oxnard College Scholars' Lecture Series appearance, "Speaking in Two Tongues" on Wednesday, March 20, at 12 noon in LS-8, the Clock Tower Auditorium. Mr. Simon's appearance will be funded in part by a grant from Poets & Writers, and he plans to read from his new book, "Caminante," and some translations of works by Latin American poets, as well as the poems in their original Spanish language. Mr. Simon has been a poet-teacher with California Poets in the Schools since 1971, a member of the Poetry Inside Out (Center for Arts in Translation) since 2001 and is a contributing editor to Poetry Flash and Temple. Other books of poetry include "Roads to Dawn Lake," "Rattlesnake Grass," "Neither of Us Can Break the Other's Hold" and "Lord of the House of Dawn," and "Son Caminos."
Although National Poetry Month is officially observed in April, Oxnard College begins the celebration with a special poetry reading featuring students on Tuesday, March 12, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Clock Tower Auditorium. OC creative writing instructor Shelley Savren invites all students to participate in this open reading. Students should limit their selection to one poem--no more than two pages long. They can reserve a space by e-mailing her at ssavren@vcccd.net. A sign-up sheet will also be available at the reading.
(More information on the April 10 appearance of poet Eloise Klein Healy will be forthcoming in the next weekly report.)
