Obie Award-winning playwright Jose Rivera's "Sonnets for an Old Century" will be produced by the Oxnard College Theatre Arts' Department during three performances to be held on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m., and on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 22 and Nov. 23 at 8 p.m. in LA-6 (The Forum).
The play is directed by Denise Getke, produced by Oxnard College Theatre Arts professor Mary Ellen Kazmark, and designed by Hassan Fayyed.
Tickets are $2.00 for students and seniors and $3.00 for general admission for the matinee. Tickets for the evening performances are $3.00 for students and seniors and $5.00 for general admission. Tickets are on sale at the OC Student Business Office in the bookstore and at the door.
The play is about a group of strangers who find themselves thrust into an unknown place after their deaths. They are given one final chance to talk about how they lived, loved, and what they learned. According to OC Theatre Arts professor Mary Ellen Kazmark, Rivera's lyrical style allows the characters to share their final thoughts about what it mean to be alive in a world where they did not know each other.
" 'Sonnets' offers some insight into the theme of death and dying in the aftermath of the Sept. 11th tragedy of a year ago," said Dr. Kazmark. "The significance of those lost lives is now carried in the memories of their loved ones.
"In this play, the characters get to voice the feelings of lost chances or unsolved problems, allowing the audience to hear the stories of people caught suspended in a time after death. This unpublished work in progress opens up questions in a unique way that illuminates the human experience following our national tragedy."
