Oxnard College students will join college students from Canada, the U.S., Mexico, South America and other nations for a “World Food Day” teleconference and presentation by Urban Jonsson, UNICEF Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa on Thursday, Oct. 16, from 9 a.m. to noon (Pacific Standard Time) in the Letters and Science lecture hall (LS-8)
Oxnard College Social Science Department Chair Dr. Carolyn Dorrance said that the teleconference will focus on “Collaboration or Calamity: Africa in Peril.” The program will link up colleges and students who will hear about the work of the new Partnership for African Development and the need for international efforts to build an alliance to coordinate action to prevent the mounting human tragedy in sub-Saharan Africa. The impact of HIV/AIDS and land and water issues affecting agriculture plus the added burden of wars and debt threaten a repeat of past African famines. The program will be available worldwide in English with simultaneous French and Spanish interpretation.
Continuing education credits for teleconference participation will be provided through Marywood University for interested clergy and social service professionals. The American Dietetic Association will offer college credit for registered dietitians and dietetic technicians and the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences has once again approved Professional Development Units (PDUs) for its members. For additional information on the World Food Day teleconference or other World Food Day resources please contact Patricia Young, National Coordinator. |
