OC HOSTS APRIL 25 YOUTH CONFERENCE FOR LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
For the fourth year the Oxnard College Youth Conference was held, this year on Friday, April 25, 2008, with more than 30 workshops geared towards career preparation and leadership and featuring motivational speakers providing “real world” examples of how to succeed. The purpose of the conference and its many events was to encourage high school students to complete high school and advance to college. About 800 students from approximately eight local high schools arrived on campus early Friday and spent most of the day attending workshops and enjoying music and dance performances featuring students from Pacifica High and Oxnard Union High Schools. Keynote speaker Gilbert Romero, a Deputy District Attorney for Ventura County, described his harsh upbringing in Oxnard and urged the students to apply themselves in school and pursue college degrees for themselves and their families.
The conference was being planned with the support of numerous partner organizations, including Oxnard College, the City of Oxnard, Clinicas Del Camino Real, Eduardo and Roxanne Miranda, Oxnard Harbor District, Labor Local No. 585, Oxnard College Financial Aid office, Oxnard College EOPS office, Radio Station 103.3 The Vibe, National Latino Peace Officers Association, Plaza Development Partners, Oxnard Harbor District, Oxnard Peace Officers Association, Inc., Tomas Mendoza Miranda, Jr., Oxnard City Corps, and Radio LAZER.
