Oxnard College proudly presents Redwoods, a solo exhibition by Los Angeles sculptor and installation artist, Terry Lenihan. A reception for the artist will be held on Wednesday, March 12, from 5:00 – 7:00 pm, with an Artist Lecture at 5:30 pm at the McNish Art Gallery. Terry’s monumental, freestanding figurative sculptures reflect the individual’s struggle against constraints, and the power of celebration in the human gesture. Her recent sculptural work, Redwoods, is a combination of vital trees and human forms emerging from inert concrete blocks. The artist explores the tension of transition through a blend of contrasting materials, with starkly opposing associations. For the artist, these sculptures evoke a friction- but is it between celebration and struggle? Hope and despair? Or perhaps between protection and freedom?
Terry Lenihan exhibits her work both nationally and internationally. Her art was recently shown in the exhibition From America, at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Minsk (MoCA Minsk), Belarus. She has also shown at Sherry Frumkin Gallery, Brand Art Gallery, Irvine Fine Arts Center and the city of Brea Art Gallery. Currently, Terry is a Professor of Art at Loyola Marymount University and directs LMU’s art education credential program. With over twenty years of experience in art education, Lenihan has directed site-specific art projects with young artists that have been sponsored by the Museum of Contemporary Art, L.A. (MOCA), and the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA). Lenihan received her MFA in sculpture from Claremont Graduate University.
