| JOIN THE "COOPERATIVE EFFORT" AT THE VENTURA COUNTY FAIR
JULY 31 - AUGUST 11, 2002
Volunteers are needed to represent Moorpark, Oxnard and Ventura colleges at the "Cooperative Effort" outreach booth at the 2002 Ventura County Fair beginning Wednesday, July 31, and continuing through Sunday, August 11, at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. The "Cooperative Effort" booth at the Fair opens at 11 a.m. and closes at 11 p.m.
Free admission to the Fair will be provided to college staff members -- and students -- who volunteer to work a three-hour shift at the booth located in the prime back wall exhibition area of the Commercial Building. The good news is that our volunteers from Moorpark, Oxnard, Ventura colleges and the District Service Center need to staff the booth for only SIX days this year. The remainder of the time our "Cooperative Effort" partners from the local universities (CLU, LaVerne, UCSB Extension, CSU Channel Islands), the County of Ventura Human Services departments and Superintendent of Schools' office will take on staffing the booth for the remaining six days.
Oxnard College, Moorpark College and Ventura College have been assigned to work the following days -- Aug. 5 (Monday), Aug. 7 (Wednesday), Aug. 9 (Friday) and Aug. 10 (Saturday). The County of Ventura, County Schools, state offices and local universities are taking care of the other days. Recently the universities put out a call to help staff an additional day, Sunday, Aug. 4, so a few more volunteers are also requested for that day.
The three-hour shifts are 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., 2-5 p.m., 5-8 p.m. and 8-11 p.m.
About a week before the County Fair opens on July 31 we'll probably have admission tickets available for volunteers.
Also, on July 22 there will be orientation meetings from 1:30 to 2:30 and 3-4 p.m. at the District Administration Center at the Camarillo Airport, then another orientation offered on Tuesday, July 23, from 10 to 11 a.m. These meetings are not mandatory for volunteers but they will be helpful in showing our staff how to operate the computer programs the public will use at the booth.
By my estimates we will need between 48 and 55 volunteers to make this a successful outreach effort. Staff members can volunteer for as many shifts as their schedules (and supervisors) permit.
We hope to target the high school-age students and adults who flock to the Commercial Building each year and encourage them to enroll in classes and programs via online and phone registration.
