OC COMMENCEMENT MAY 17
Contact: 32nd ANNUAL OXNARD COLLEGE COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES TO BE HELD MAY 17, 2007 AT TRACK STADIUM Oxnard College student Miguel Hernandez will represent his classmates from the Class of 2007 and address an audience of family, friends during commencement exercises to be held Thursday, May 17, 2007 in the Oxnard College Track Stadium. The ceremony will begin at 1:30 p.m. With approximately 484 students eligible to receive their Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees, about 300 students are expected to participate in the ceremonies. In addition, it will be the first time that approximately 144 students who have earned their Certificates of Achievement after completing vocational programs will participate in the commencement ceremonies. Miguel Hernandez, who was nominated by his instructor, Oxnard College speech instructor Amy London, will speak for his fellow students and will take the opportunity to thank those family members, teachers and others who supported his effort to earn a college degree. Hernandez, a native of Santa Barbara, will be attending San Diego State University in the fall with the goal of earning his Masters of Business Administration degree and owning his own company some day. Welcoming the graduates will be Oxnard College President Dr. Richard Durán, VCCCD Chancellor James Meznek, Dr. Larry Miller, Chair of the Governing Board of the Ventura County Community College District, Vice Chair Robert Huber and trustees Arturo Hernandez, Cheryl Heitmann, Stephen Blum and student trustee Pardeese Ehya. Other dignitaries expected to participate in the ceremony are OC Interim Executive Vice President for Student Learning Lyn MacConnaire, Vice President for Business Services Ken Bailey, OC Academic Senate President Jeannette Redding, OC Classified Senate President Jose Cornelio and Jose Luis Hernandez, outgoing president of Associated Students, Oxnard College, for 2006-2007. Conferring degrees will be Dr. MacConnaire, who will invite Chancellor Meznek and the Trustees and Ms. Redding to congratulate the graduates. OC faculty members David Magallanes and Linda Chaparro will present the estimated 300 candidates who will receive degrees for General Liberal Arts and Sciences programs and those students who earned Certificates of Achievement for completing vocational programs. The program will also include the Pledge of Allegiance by Jose Luis Hernandez and the national anthem sung by OC speech instructor Amy London. Sign language interpreters will also translate the proceedings.
