The Oxnard College Theatre Arts Department presents Shakespeare’s “Othello” with Jackie Redrose portraying the title role in this ambitious production that opens Wednesday, April 17, with a matinee performance at 2 p.m. in LA-6 (The Forum). The production will include three matinees and four evening performances through April 27.
According to Theatre Arts Professor Mary Ellen Kazmark the traditional settings of the play — Venice, Italy and Cyprus, Turkey — will be changed slightly. In this production the “Venetian streets so well known to Southern Californians” will serve as the location of the play, with Venice and Muscle Beach serving as a backdrop to drama.
And rather than traveling by ship to Cyprus, this play's Cyprus is in California, writes Dr. Kazmark. Located “via a tortuous freeway system….Othello and his military officers would be successful in controlling an unruly mob somewhere east of the 405, truly the edge of civilization as we know it," she explained.
The cast of 20 includes Wendy Clyde (Desdemona), Monica Cruz (Bianca), Gene Fox (Brabantio), Marcel Hill (Iago), Michael Meade (Cassio), and Ray Padilla (Roderigo). The remaining cast: Christopher Bennett (Crowd), Joe Boeing (Gratiano), Jenny Conway (Crowd), Victoria De La Chica (Herald), Edward Diaz (Senator), Dellilah Garcia (Crowd), Patti McCarthy (Emilia), Cameron Naccarato (Lodovico), Noel Ramirez (Montano), Dean Smith (Duke), Luke Wilson (Senator), John Wright (Musician/Singer) and Joshua Zimmerle (Clown/Comedian).
Tickets will be sold by students, or through the OC Student Business Office.
