Oxnard College presents Educational Abstracts , an exhibition of abstract painting and drawing guest-curated by L.A. artist, Eric J. Smail. Using line, shape, form and color each artist in this group show use aesthetically, educational abstract art to define their own meaning of the word abstract , in their personal styles.
Whimsical and even playful at times, Steve Schmidt adds a mechanical twist to his drawing process by using power tools to create mark-making and line; marks dance across the surface of his paper leaving a meditative space for the viewer to explore. Best known for his iridescent acrylic paintings, Jimi Gleason responds to the play of light and the location of the viewer. Within shifting fields of color, forms emerge and recede as the art simultaneously, react to and represent their physical environment. Using conventionally decorative stencils, Dee Small creates complex surfaces in her acrylic paintings. Small?s vivid palette of yellows, pinks, and baby blues, shape and form interweave and overlap one another, expressing beautifully layered abstractions.
In conjunction with, Educational Abstracts , artist and curator Eric J. Smail has created a site-specific, experimental painting installation in the gallery project room. In his installation, entitled, Biolistic , Mr. Smail is interested in exploring culturally derivative patterns and geometric structures, which invoke our sense of present day designer biology. |
