On Friday, March 28, "El Dia de Indigena" will be celebrated at Oxnard College which is hosting a group of 20 visiting professors from Mexico, escorted by Professor Javier Galvez from Claremont Graduate University. The "Celebration of Indigenous Mexico" kicks off with a welcoming ceremony in the OC gymnasium at 10 a.m. Professor Linda Chaparro will serve as emcee with assistance from the OC MEChA club. There will be a presentation on the "Aztec calendar" by Professor Galvez and five workshops conducted in campus classrooms by the visiting professors who will explore the culture, music and the diverse languages of Mexico, including Tarahumara, Huichol, Mixteca, Maya and Nahuatl.
Following lunch, at 1:30 p.m. there will a closing session in the gymnasium featuring a performance by the award-winning, Danzantes del Sol troupe,who are affiliated with Professor Galvez and Claremont University.
For those who can't make the daytime program, there is a wonderful opportunity to experience the Danzantes del Solas they dance Friday night at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center, Ventura Room, starting at 6 p.m. A $10 admission charge includes dinner catered by Cabo Restaurant. The event is sponsored by Clinicas del Camino Real.
