DR. LYNN FAUTH TO PRESENT AT UC BERKELEY FACULTY FORUM
Oxnard College English instructor Dr. Lynn Fauth will present a scholarly paper at the Concurrent Papers Sessions of the C.S. Lewis Foundation Faculty Forum Conference on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Fauth’s work, entitled “That Insidious Strength: Religious Bias in the Academy,” was chosen by an editorial committee based on its suitability to the conference theme of “Free Speech: Academic Freedom & Religious Expression,” according to Jill A. Fort, Faculty Forum Coordinator for the C.S. Lewis Foundation. Dr. Fauth’s paper had to meet specific criteria based on the diversity of academic disciplines, diversity of perspectives represented, and a balance between the theoretical vs. practical application of free speech. Dr. Fauth said his scholarly paper will touch on religious bias, which many students face in the classroom when they enroll in English courses and reveal to their professors that they are Christians with established religious beliefs.
“It’s not necessarily a prejudice against religion—it’s fine if you profess to be a Buddhist or a Muslim. But I’ve found that if a student has a Christian perspective they may face this bias,” he said. |
