MAY 3RD MULTICULTURAL ARTS DAY TO FEATURE MUSIC, DANCE & LECTURES
Oxnard College has invited hundreds of local high school students to its second annual “Multicultural Arts Day” celebration on Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at the Rose Avenue campus.
The event will be open to the public from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. with students from local high schools invited to attend and sample a wide array of ethnic food, to listen to lectures and panel discussions, and to enjoy performances of ethnic dancing, live music, theatre and artwork.
According to OC campus staff organizers, the event is a celebration of every religion, philosophy, nationality, style of art, cooking, dance, music and poetry. The day will begin at 8 a.m. with students arriving at the O.C. Gymnasium and a "Procession of Cultures," followed campus tour guides lining up to escort the students throughout the campus.
More than 30 groups of musicians and dancers will be performing throughout the day at various stages: the OC amphitheatre, the LS Promenade stage, the OE Quad area in front of the bookstore and other staging areas near the cafeteria. Entertainment includes:
Japanese Taiko Drummers, Scottish country dancing, Martial Arts, Native American Storytelling, Scottish Bagpipes, African drummers, the Oxnard College Ballet Folklorico, Jazz Band by Fundi Lejohn, Greek dancers, Los Paranoiz Band, Latin Reggae by Memo, rhythm & blues singer-guitarist Teresa Russell, Polynesian Dance Groups from Pacifica High School Polynesian Club and Tina's Ports of Paradise, Tribal Belly Dance, One World Drummers, Tinikling Bamboo Filipino Dance by the Camarillo High School International Dance Club and hot salsa and cumbia dance by the OC Latin Dance Club.
In addition, there are more than 50 lectures and workshops being presented throughout the day featuring dozens of Oxnard College professors and guest speakers. There will also be a Career Fair for students with representatives from 30 county employers including Adelphia, Cumulus Radio, Hollister & the Pacific View Mall, Premier Staff, the Ventura County Environmental Health Division and other companies.
Students who fill out a Oxnard College application and fee waiver form can also enter an opportunity drawing that for a free computer.
“Last year’s Multicultural Day established a wonderful tradition and it promises to be one of the most festive days of the year for OC,” said Oxnard College Classified Senate President Jose Cornelio, who is coordinating the event along with a committee of volunteers that includes support staff, faculty and Oxnard College students.
“There is such an abundance of talent and information to be found in Ventura County and it is an honor for Oxnard College to showcase a diversity of cultures,” said Oxnard College President Lydia Ledesma-Reese.
The day-long celebration is sponsored by the Oxnard College Classified Senate in conjunction with the Oxnard College Foundation, the Oxnard College Academic Senate and the Oxnard College Associated Student Government.

Volunteers are also being sought to help provide tours of the OC campus and to help direct students and visitors to lecture halls, classrooms and stages where events will be scheduled throughout the day, beginning at 8 a.m. with the traditional Parade of National Flags.
