SPEAKERS LECTURE SERIES

The Oxnard College Speakers Series is held on Wednesdays from 12:45 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. in LS 8 (Clock Tower Auditorium) and is funded in part by the Oxnard College Foundation.
The events are free, and students, faculty, staff and community members are welcome to attend. Visitors can park free in the A and B parking lots located at Bard Road and South Campus Road. “Deafhood 101” -- In Celebration of Deaf Awareness Month, Charles Katz, Ed.D, will introduce the concept of deafhood and will provide glimpses into ways it has been perceived and used by the deaf community. He will also introduce the concept of the “Deaf Chair,” a psychological exercise to demonstrate deafhood in action.

“No Justice, No Peace” -- In Celebration of Latino Heritage Month, Arts for Action, a collective of young artists dedicated to economic, environmental and social justice, will show a multimedia presentation on the use of the arts and community organizing to address issues of violence and injustice in the City of Oxnard.

The Challenges of Latina Professionals -- In Celebration of Latino Heritage Month, Oxnard College Professor Ramona Armijo, PhD. will present a PowerPoint based on her research of how Latinas face greater compromises and inequities than others in the areas of gender, culture and social class and in our professional workforce.

Same-Sex Marriage: a Civil Right or a Threat to Tradition? -- Attorneys Joseph Rund, Ellen J. Hirvela, and Diane Goodman will hold a panel discussion about how the new California marriage cases impact gays and lesbians and their families and what effect Proposition 8 (appearing on the November ballot) will have if it is passed.

The Presidential Platforms -- Oxnard College Professors Gloria Guevara, PhD. and Carolyn Dorrance, PhD. will discuss the issues in the upcoming presidential campaign, focusing on the differences between the two candidates’ policies on economics, war, health care, and environment and how they affect our lives.

An Update from Our Nation’s Capitol -- U.S. Congresswoman Lois Capps, who represents Oxnard and the Central California Coast, will discuss the latest issues under debate in the U.S. Congress, including education, economy, healthcare, immigration, the environment and the war in Iraq. (This event is rescheduled from Dec. 2007).

Three Cups of Tea: A Campus Discussion -- Oxnard College Professor Marie Butler, Ph D. will lead a discussion of our One Book, One Campus selection, Three Cups of Tea, about the extraordinary account of writer Greg Mortenson’s efforts to build schools for girls in Pakistan and Afghanistan in order to promote peace.

Family Activism: Change We Desire for Our Communities -- Author and Psychologist Roberto Vargas, Ph D. will share stories from his book, Family Activism, and discuss how we can develop the skills and attitudes necessary to tackle broader problems in our community and empower positive change within our families and society.

The Mathematics of Game Shows -- Oxnard College Professor Mark Bates will lecture on the history of the game show genre, (the first “Reality TV,”) and will analyze the extensive use of mathematics in game shows of past and present, while entertaining the audience with a new way to experience mathematics.

Performing Oral Histories: Real People, Real Stories, Real Funny! -- Historian and Oxnard native David G. García, PhD., will talk about how his education – from Oxnard College to UCLA – led him to document the comedy theater group, “Culture Clash,” and will show film clips of their interview-based monologues from across “AmeriCCA.”

Where Have You Gone, Huckleberry Finn? -- Oxnard College Professor Anthony Rodriguez and students from the Literature Institute of Oxnard College will compare and contrast the lifestyles of contemporary American youths with their counterparts from Mark Twain's era, exploring social and cultural nuances of these periods.
