THIRTIETH ANNUAL OC AWARDS CEREMONY HONORS STAFF, STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS
OXNARD, California—Outstanding students, faculty and staff members were honored and more than $70,000 in scholarships and academic awards handed out at the 30th annual Oxnard College Awards Ceremony held Sunday, April 30, 2006, at the Courtyard by Marriott in Oxnard.
During the banquet Oxnard College students were awarded scholarships and academic honors were presented to students who will transfer to universities or plan to continue their studies at Oxnard College.
Recipients of the Oxnard College “Excellence in Service” awards were presented to those faculty, staff, student and community members who were nominated and selected by their peers based on their dedication to the campus.
The awardees were:
q Oxnard College mathematics instructor Colleen Ryan – a founding faculty member of OC-- was the winner of the Mark Dever Award for Excellence in Teaching - Full-time Faculty;
q Part-time mathematics instructor Mamerta Santiago was the winner of the Wallace Stevens Award for Excellence in Teaching-Part-Time Faculty;
q Oxnard College Health Center Coordinator Mary Jones was the winner of the Teresa Archuleta Award for Excellence in Service-Non-Teaching Academic Staff;
q Oxnard College Instructional Lab Technician Dan Reyna was the winner of the John Milton Award for Excellence in Service by a Classified Employee;
q Oxnard College student Lindsey Herder was the winner of the Frank Gilbreth Award for Outstanding Service by a Student Leader;
And 2006 marked the seventh year in which the William Simpson Award for
Excellence in Service to Oxnard College will be presented to a friend and supporter of Oxnard College. The winner, Oxnard College President Lydia Ledesma-Reese, will be leaving her position June 30, having served as president since 2002. The William Simpson Award was named after the longtime Oxnard civic leader and VCCCD trustee who was considered "the father of Oxnard College" in his unwavering support of the establishment of Oxnard College in 1975.
The Oxnard College Foundation also presented its “Heart of Gold” Award to longtime staff member Augie Castaneda, who runs the publications resource center at the college and who has worked as an advisor to the Asian-Pacific Islander Club. The award honors an individual who has made a measurable contribution to the success of a program, in this case the “Adopt a Computer” program that provides computer technology to OC students who cannot afford it.The Mark Dever Award was named after the OC journalism instructor who died in an auto accident in 1983. The Wallace Stevens Award was named after the famous American poet who, as a part-time teacher, promoted creativity in the classroom
The Teresa Archuleta Award, named for the late EOPS counselor and coordinator who served Oxnard College for more than 20 years, recognizes the Outstanding Non-Teaching Academic Employee. The John Milton Award for Excellence in Service by a Classified Employee was named after the brilliant English poet whose blindness was no handicap to his genius as an author and a statesman.
Each year organizations, business firms and individuals in our community sponsor scholarships for outstanding Oxnard College students. The following students have been selected to receive scholarships. Attached is a full list of the scholarship and award winners:
Memorial Scholarships
The EOPS-Teresa Archuleta Memorial Scholarship, named for the late EOPS director, was awarded to Jose Hernandez; the Carlos Diaz Memorial Scholarship to Ayde Mendoza; Nathaniel Ryan Klopmanbaerselman Memorial Scholarship for International Students Hideko Sibato; the Altrusa International-Adele Cunningham Memorial Scholarship to Aisha Gonzales; the Altrusa International-Daviene Warshawsky Memorial Scholarship to Erica Tomaschow; the Ron Jackson Memorial Scholarship to Xuemeng Wang; and the Sylvia Watson Memorial to Karan Serrato.
Community Organizations Scholarships
Oxnard/Hueneme Branch of the American Association of University Women Scholarships were awarded to Rose Gonzalez and Hideko Shibato.
The G.O.O.D. Club Scholarship (Greater Organization of Oxnard Democrats) recipients were: Mary Harden, Jose L. Hernandez, Rachel Miranda, Tuan Ngyen, Denis Rodriguez, Karan Serrato, Paula Smith and Xuemeng Wang.
The Culinary Restaurant Management Scholarship was awarded to Malinee-Mary Chinakool (Strawberry Festival); Shawn Anderson (First Semester) and Beronica Mendoza (Continuing Student).
The Robert and Hope Holcomb Scholarship recipient was Lindsey Herder.
The Westlake Village Garden Club Scholarship went to Ashley Sarver.

Track 2 – Emilia Arteaga, Alicia Crisotomos, Josefina Garong, Rose Gonzales, Elizabeth Hernandez, Esteben Lopez, Juana Ramirez and Karan Sarrato.
Altrusa International Of Oxnard Inc. – Health Care Scholarship recipient was Veronica Solis; Altrusta International of Oxnard Inc. – Roberta Ross Memorial Scholarship – Nelly Pina.
American Legion-Unit 48 Scholarship was awarded to Aden Rodriguez.
Recipients of the Avelina Villalobos Scholarship-Employers Advisory Council scholarships were Maricella Aguilar and Elizabeth Iribe.
Title V Endowment Scholarships were awarded to: Erika Flores, Tuan Q. Nguyen, Keith Norris, Mayra Paniagua, John Peters, Juana Ramirez, Corinna Renteria, Monica Sanchez, Donna Sanders, Paula Smith, Natalie Snee, Erica Tomaschow, Anthony Urban, Jr., Martha Vasquez and Xuemeng Wang.
