The artwork, often whimsically titled “Y, X change,” “Gumdrops”, and “Particle Placement Theory,” comprise a geometric and abstract body of work. Focusing on the illusionary image of the cube as a central theme, Smail explores color, space, and composition, representing his concerns of the condensing of physical space through the existence of high-speed travel, instantaneous telecommunication and the Internet.
Smail received his MFA degree at Claremont Graduate University. He has shown extensively throughout Southern California including Huntington Beach Art Center, ANDLAB gallery, Crazy Space Gallery, and The Art Institute of California Orange County. Currently, he teaches drawing and painting at First Street Gallery Art Center in Claremont.
