OXNARD COLLEGE OFFERS FALL 2007
SPEAKERS LECTURE SERIES
United Farm Workers co-founder Dolores Huerta, U.S. Congresswoman Lois Capps and poets Maria Melendez and Elijah Imlay are among the guest lecturers appearing at the 2007 Fall Oxnard College Speakers Lecture Series that begins Wednesday, September 19, 2007.
The Oxnard College Speakers Series is held on Wednesdays from 12:45 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. in LS 8 (Clock Tower Auditorium) and is funded in part by the Oxnard College Foundation.
The events are free, and students, faculty, staff and community members are welcome to attend. Visitors need to purchase an all-day parking permit for $1.00.

Poet Maria Melendez on “Sneaky Politics: Side-swiping Contemporary Issues in Poetry”*
Maria Melendez, poet and finalist for the PEN Center USA Literary Awards for her book, How Long She’ll Last in This World, will read from her poetry and discuss the process of striking a tonal balance, in writing, between sounding urgent and sounding shrill.

Will Scherzberg presents “My Deaf Education”
In celebration of Deaf Awareness Week, Will Scherzberg, accompanied by other members from the deaf community, will provide personal insight on the educational experience from a deaf perspective, including a discussion of challenges and barriers, as well as successes.

Nereyda de la O presents “Venezuela in Focus”
Nereyda de la O, UC Santa Cruz graduate, will show her documentary: Empezando Ahora: Voces de Venezuela/Starting Now: Voices from Venezuela and will explore the political and social changes in Venezuela since 1999, with an emphasis on women organizing for economic justice.

Oxnard College Health Coordinator Mary Jones presents “Breast Cancer: So Many Stories”
In celebration of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Mary Jones, nurse practitioner and Oxnard College nurse, will facilitate a panel discussion of women who have survived breast cancer and women who are still fighting the battle.

Elijah Imlay presents “Veterans of War, Veterans of Peace*
Elijah Imlay, poet, therapist, meditation leader and Viet Nam vet, will read poems from his manuscript, Playing with the Band in Nam, and will discuss the value of combining writing with meditation in order to promote peace and healing from war.

George Rodriguez presents “The Psychology of Superheroes”
George Rodriguez, Oxnard College psychology professor, will discuss issues facing the superhero, such as: alienation, relationship difficulties, fears of secret identity being discovered, sacrificing one’s own needs to serve humanity, being misunderstood, and giving up powers to be “normal.”

Professor Linda Kamaila presents “Witches: Between the Rational and the Magical”
In celebration of Halloween, Linda Kamaila, Oxnard College anthropology professor, will lecture on the extraordinary claims of paranormal activity made by witches, will compare witches to sorcerers and shamans, and will explore why people are drawn to witchcraft and whether witchcraft works.

Author Ernesto Caravantes presents “Transcending Culture and Achieving Success”
For this “One Book, One Campus” event, Ernesto Caravantes, author of the highly controversial book, Clipping Their Own Wings, will explore how the Latino culture is ultimately responsible for their own educational underachievement and high drop-out rate.

Moses Mora presents “From Shisholop to Tortilla Flats”
In celebration of Native American History Month, Moses Mora, community activist, will talk about the evolution of the Chumash community, Shisholop, to Tortilla Flats and will present a DVD documenting the mural project, titled Tortilla Flats, soon to be installed in Westside Ventura.

Professor Anthony Rodriguez presents “Selfless or Selfish: That is the Question”
Anthony Rodriguez, Oxnard College English professor, will be joined by students from the Literature Institute of Oxnard College to conduct a mock trial of the lead character Antigone from the ancient Greek play Antigone by Sophocles.
