OC adjunct professor Albert Wolfkiel was named “Engineer of the Year” and OC students Hugo Groening, Monica Elizabeth Lovio Meeks were awarded scholarships at the 2001 National Engineers Week Scholarship banquet held Feb. 24 at Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley.
The event was sponsored by the Ventura County-Santa Barbara Scholarship Committee, which included contributions from the American Society of Naval Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the California Society of Professional Engineers, the Consulting Engineers Land Surveyors of California, the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers and the Society of American Military Engineers.
Wolfkiel was nominated for the award by the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers (IEEE) . He teaches computer science and business classes at Oxnard College and is an electrical engineer at NAVSEA Surface Warfare Division, Port Hueneme.
In addition to the OC students, Ventura College students Nicholas George Brown and John Parra also received scholarships.
Since 1951 National Engineers Week has helped to increase public awareness and appreciation of the engineering profession and to celebrate the positive contributions engineers make to society. This year’s theme was “Engineers Make a World of Difference,” and the keynote speaker was Bohdan “Bo” Bejmuk, Vice President and General Manager of Sea Launch Home Port.;
