Oxnard College and the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) will co-host a Youth Leadership Conference on Saturday, Oct. 23, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the main campus, 4000 S. Rose Avenue.
The purpose of the event “is to encourage young people to finish high school and plan for college,” said Dr. Jaime Casillas, an instructional dean at Oxnard College.
“The college is specifically reaching out to high school juniors and seniors. In addition to motivational speakers, we’re going to have about thirty different workshops that will allow youth to take a good look at a variety of possible occupations, including social work, criminology, fire fighting, medicine, television production, CSI investigating, chemistry, automotive technology, public administration, business, and others.”
The master of ceremonies for the day will be NBC news anchor David Cruz. College registration and student financial aid information will also be available. Registration is free for all youth attending and they will receive all meals and promotional education items. Students will also be entitled to earn one half unit of college credit. There will also be cultural events and live entertainment for the students.
The conference is made possible by numerous community organizations and businesses. “Oxnard College and LULAC are grateful for the support and generosity of partner agencies and businesses in our community, including the County’s Workforce Investment Board, Amgen, Plaza Development, Hass Automation, St. John’s Hospital, the City of Oxnard, Union Bank, Clinicas del Camino Real, Bilingual Vocational Services, and many others,” said Gil Guevara of LULAC.
The Oxnard Union High School District will provide bus service between their specific high school location and the college and there will be free parking at the campus.
“We hope that parents encourage all of their high school age children to attend. Participating in this conference should be viewed as a very wise investment in their children’s future,” said OC Dean of Student Services Joe Ramirez.
