HIGH SCHOOL COMPETITORS TO VY FOR TROPHIES NOV. 16 AT "GEOGRAPHY BOWL 2002"
OXNARD, California— Winners of the Saturday, November 16 “GEOGRAPHY BOWL 2002” competition to be held at Oxnard College will get a chance to soar over the campus and most of southern Ventura County, courtesy of Aspen Helicopters of Oxnard.
All 27 Ventura County public and private high schools have been invited to send student teams to compete in the daylong event, beginning at 8:30 a.m., according to organizers. Last year nine schools and 152 students showed up to compete and support their school teams.
This is the 14th annual competition and the fourth year that the event will be held in November in conjunction with National Geography Awareness Month. Geography instructor Chris Mainzer, who serves as head coordinator of the event, predicts that many of the questions will continue to reflect a growing interest in the Middle East, Asia and topical earth-related issues like global warming and political upheaval.
“GEO BOWL 2002” will include an individual written competition challenging students’ knowledge of global issues on geography, the environment and economics.
The event concludes with round robin team competition held in the OC gymnasium. Awards will be given to the individual first, second and third place winners and recognition awards will go to the teams placing first, second in third in each of the categories.
The team that wins round robin competition receives the perpetual trophy to be displayed at their school for one year. Last year Oxnard Union High School-Team 1 took first place at the “Geography Bowl 2001” competition held Saturday, November 17, at Oxnard College, holding off a strong challenge from Camarillo High School and St. Bonaventure teams that captured second and third place, respectively, at the annual event. |
