ADOPT A COMPUTER PROGRAM SEEKS COMPUTER DONATIONS
Oxnard College’s innovative Adopt a Computer program has almost become a victim of its own success now that all of its 153 upgraded computers are now in use by OC students.
Program coordinator Augie Castaneda said that the program is presently seeking more donated computers to keep up the supply of computers to be loaned out to students. The Adopt a Computer program, supported by the Oxnard College Foundation since it began in 1999, allows low-income students at the college to get computers. Students can rent a computer for $20 a semester, then rent it for subsequent semesters for $5 and also pay a $5 filing fee.
When OC student Adrienne Allenbaugh first enrolled in computer classes she struggled until she qualified to get a computer on loan. Her life was transformed as she started to excel in her classes. “It completely transformed my life and changed my whole attitude about achieving top grades,” she said.
Another student, Rosalinda Gutierrez, is now a work study employee of the program training as a computer technician. A Financial Aid recipient and a Re-Entry Center student, she is grateful to have the opportunity to give back to other students in need.
Past donors of the program include: Department of the Interior, Moorpark College, Williamette Industries, The GAP, Best Forms, Inc., Oxnard Public Library, City of Oxnard, TEAGUE, HAAS Automation, Larry Gesling PCBN Bank, American Commercial Bank, Abe Sanchez of Market Scan Thousand Oaks, SVERDRUP TECH., KINKOs, Duarte Industries, M & H Properties Management, Child Development Center of Oxnard College and Wesley Busch of City Impact of Oxnard.
