OXNARD COLLEGE TO OBSERVE SEPTEMBER 17 “CONSTITUTION DAY” WITH LECTURES, DEBATES AND FILM PRESENTATION
On Monday, September 19th, the Social Science Department will
sponsor a dialogue and debate on Freedom of Speech and the U.S. Constitution.
Dr. Carolyn Dorrance will explain the language of the First Amendment protection of freedom of speech in the United States Constitution and some interpretations by the Supreme Court. Dr. Scott Corbett will review some historical controversies and compare them to the debate over the “Patriot’s Act” passed by Congress after 9/11. Professor Chris Horrock will present the philosophical defense of free speech offered by John Stuart Mill and lead students in a debate about free speech issues. Professor Gloria Guevara will present a film on challenges to free speech protection. Current concerns within the Latino community on constitutional questions will be reviewed by Dr. Tomas Salinas.
This program is an observance of Constitution Day (September 17) and will be held in the Student Services building CSSC 101 between 10 am and 12 noon.
